When should a captain be addressed as captain?

I can understand a captain being addressed by his title in front of passengers and I've also seen personal faxes with the name of Captain so and so on it as the printed address sent from their home and heard of people using the title out of the work environment. Just how far do you think this title should extend?

Massey Pro 14th Oct 2004 06:27

He should be addressed as Captain when....
- You've just screwed up
- You need a hand
- You're hung over
- You slept with his daughter
- He's grumpy
- You think the name C:mad: T!!! is unappropriate
- He could help your career path

bigflyingrob 14th Oct 2004 09:08

captain

How about when you are on the Enterprise. As in "Keptin there is a Klingon wessel on the starboard bow! "

prospector 14th Oct 2004 09:09

When you are embarking, or disembarking from your tour bus, and the driver has 4 bars on his shoulders. They may now officially call themselves bus captains, and fair enough too I think.

When I am asked and not before.

I know one that has it on passport.

Massey Pro 14th Oct 2004 19:07

- You're sleeping with his wife
- The weather has turned to s h i t, and your pay just isn't enough to warrent the controls on that particular flight
- You want to hit the booze on your upcoming overnight

Seen at a service station the other day,the numberplate,767-CPT. on a 4wheel drive.Ahhhhhhhhh!

QSK? 14th Oct 2004 23:25

I absolute insist that my wife refers to me as "Captain", and follow all my orders, since I regained my PPL after a 25 year absence!

Unfortunately, I can't share with 'pruners the type of comments I always receive in return (??), otherwise Woomera would ban me!

Old Smokey 15th Oct 2004 00:29

As this is Dunnunda & Godzone, the cultural norm is to refer to the captain by his / her name (this may not work in other parts of the world).

It is convenient to call Him / Her "Captain" when you've forgotten His / Her name.

Capt = Captain.

CPT = Cockpit Procedures Trainer

Time Bomb Ted 15th Oct 2004 02:05

He should be addressed as Captain when:

- You ran over his dog
- you threw up in his map bag
- His Daughter is not 18 like she said she was
- You leave a smelly surprise in his toilet
- You need to borrow money
- You need him to bail you out of the watch-house

doubleu-anker 15th Oct 2004 02:24

Being genetically superior to all other races, I insist on being addressed as Captain Sir, until such time, when formalities can be dispensed with, or one is "stood down", Then and only then, Sir will suffice.

The Enema Bandit 15th Oct 2004 03:38

The Anal Princess always says to me "Ooh Captain! Ooh Captain! Ooh arr" and then promptly tells me how good I am.

767-CPT
I don't get it, why would someone want to brag about being a 767 co-pilot?

Mr. Boeing 15th Oct 2004 10:05

There is a motel on the outskirts of Sale called The Captains Lodge and is run by an ex airline captain from Europe. By all accounts he and the locals don't see eye to eye. There was an article in the Herald Sun about him and apparently he legally changed his first name to Captain as he alledgedly wasn't getting the respect that he felt that he deserved.

FO Cokebottle 16th Oct 2004 18:42

Only when "Oh Captain My Captain" is called for.

Get a life!!!!!

robroy 17th Oct 2004 10:29

Mr. Boeing

The motel outside Sale.

It sounds like an ex PNG, guy, of German origin, by the nickname of "cementhead " He got a job in Japan , after he PNG in the late 60's as an F27 Capt., SELF PROCLAIMED.

The Japanese company found out after a while and P*ssed him off and I believe he got out of Japan, before they could grab him for a short stay in a friendly Japanese Correctional Centre.

When staying in Mel. on the F-27 course, as an F/O, he would phone the front desk at the Southern Cross, asking them to page, Capt. Frank Sta********R, then as the page was made, he would rush up to the front desk, louding proclaiming, "I am Capt. S, I am Capt S.

He also made it on TV during the late 70's or early 80's in Mel., I think whinging about how the local council, wouldn't help him to help his motel in someway or another.

He was with AAPNG, based in Rabaul.

Cheers,

robroy

Omark,

I guess you are out of the Australian car license plate "loop".

For a full personalised plate, it is VERY expensive. For a reular personalised plate, using 3 letters and three numbers, it is a LOT cheaper.

How would you enscribe Captain with 3 letters??? Cap or Cpt are good choices to me!

I sincerely doubt someone would have a number plate ascribing to a 767 Cockpit Resource Trainer. I take it you were joking, or seriously misunderstood?

Why Omark44? A No4 in 7.62 will do the job better, but I am biased. :p
