Anyone have a Basic IFR PC Program??
Hi all,
I am looking for a program, nothing fancy, to get the scan going and practice some intercepts. I am not overly whizzy on computers, so windows based would be preferable to DOS.
I think this has been asked before, however the PPrune search function is disabled lately.
Thanks in advance
The Hedge.

SIM
Hedge,
I used to swear by my trusty IFT-PRO (dos based) until windows XP compatability issues raised their ugly head.
I recently ordered Jeppesen Flight Pro online from PCaviator.com.au or something like that.
A very good program fast, easy to use/install and works well with a joystick - much easier to calibrate than the old DOS based sims.
Also has a good world wide database and all the Australian Navaids. Very easy to practise what you described.
I think it was under $200 give it a try, and steer clear of the Microsoft Sims, they get complicated. This is my 6 th sim program and wihout a doubt the best.
cheers

GO JEPP FLITE PRO
Doesn't have all the outside the cockpit eye candy or bells and whistles the MS FS has, but the panels are good and ifyou want it for pure IFR procedures/scann development, look no further.
You can spend extra money on the Jepp Simcharts then fly the approach(es) and watch the playback over the plate.
I bought mine a few years ago out of the US and it still comes in handy for practice for renewals etc.

Just a thought.....
Wasnt there a bloke developing something a few years back. I dont recall where I downloaded it from or any of the details (sorry) but i do remember thinking that with a bit more development it really would be quite good. Suggest you do a search if you can (would be about 3-4 yrs back). Failing that, though i havent used it in a loooong while, the MS FS2000, with some downloaded dedicated IFR panels from Flightsim.com was definitely a good alternative. These dedicated IFR panels i speak of take up almost the whole screen, and I found by turning down all the visual realism, I could get very high frame rates on these panels.
Anyway, good luck, and keep us posted. Any extra scan practice is worthwhile, even if it doesnt fly like the real thing.

Hi Hedge,
For many years I have been using a program called VH-IFR.
It is very basic, (based on a 172, I think) but very good for honing your scan.
It was put out in the mid 90's for DOS, but will run on windows.
If you like, I can try to zip it (I don't have the original) and email it to you.
Even though I fly kero burners, I still use this program quite often.

I've got the same program as DogDude, except missing page 1 of instructions. you're welcome to it if you wish.
Plus I have a little ball-tearer of a DOS program called ADF.exe. Lets you sort out all the mysteries of ADF work with either fixed card or RMI, without having to fly the plane. You can sit back and just navigate without all the stress.
Enjoy the intercepting

PC Aviator
Hey Hedge,
Have you tried the PC Aviator Shop? They have around 80 titles in store, ranging from commercial simulators, to combat jet trainers and they even have two IFR trainers. Not a bad site to surf - some very good titles.
They have Jeppesson FlitePRO in stock, at $174.95. Check it out at:
IFR Trainers
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Souls.

I use hasselhof's recommendation. Simple and easy. You can concentrate on the instruments easily.
Leave pushing and pulling levers to airplane. It's all about orientation. Flying the thing is secondary.
