Drinks
What's the best kind of beverage to keep in the nose locker, so at the end of a long flight you've got something cold to knock back.
What altitude and/or temperature will a can of beer withstand before it all goes wrong? Is glass better than aluminum? Are beer or rtds better travellers, or are you better off mixing a drink when you get there?
All suggestions welcome!!!
Cheers

Capt L,
from past experience the ole tinny will handle a snap freeze at 24,000 ft - the only hassle being it takes a while to get back to drinking consistency. Most beers are not great after freezing so you need to experiment a bit - full strngth seems to handle it better than the lites.
cheers and cold beers

A room temperature can of coke takes about 2 hours to go slushy in the wing locker at FL290. 1.5 hours and it's still OK.
A great story about the aircraft behind ferried up to Horn Island from TSV area duing WW2 Apparently the slots for the large bullets/shells in the wings would hold one stubby each. As there was no beer supplied up there, ferry flights into HID were eagerly awaited.

One of our captain's (who incidently has Australian citizenship) sticks his 6 pack in the forward baggage compartment. They get nice and chilly in winter but in summer when it's unusually warm it's not so effective.
Note, his tinnies are the 500ml variety!
Fortunately he doesn't consume them in flight but on the way to the hotel.

A carton in the aft end of a PA31 wing locker will get to drinking temperature between Roma and Quilpie in the Winter, no good in the Summer when it is still 25 or so degrees at 10000 feet.
Never had any problem with stubbies blowing lids off, although it was generally fairly smooth in the Winter.
Tinnies may be the go if you are expecting a bumpy ride. I have had stubbies blow the lids in a 'Cruiser goin up the beach!
Cheers,
I'm gone! ( to the fridge! )

Does the alcohol content matter?
When I put beer (bottles) in the freezer to fast chill it (and forget all about it) it leeches the alcohol and tastes literally like piss. However, my Polish vodka in the freezer just doesn't freeze, but goes merely syruppy (which is great with freshly squeezed orange stuff).
NB the beer is 4% - would a higher strength be better?
Also what about the starting temp of the ale. If it was not pre-chilled then it would be better for warmer (read Aussie) climates, especially for higher FL's?

A quik bush trick too chil beer is as follows.1 dig a hole at least 2 foot deep, step 2 pour atleast ten litres of water in the hole, note water not needed in damp areas.step 3 place 6 beers on there ends in the hole,step4,fill in hole and pour diesal or petrol over the hole and light er up!!!repeat step 4 and when the flames go out dig up the beers and enjoy.
Or you put a beer in a footy sock with the end soaked in petrol and then do the kevin sheedy and swing the sock in circles over your head realy fast, cold beer!!!! Beer in winglockers of chieftans and 402s is not a good idea as the turbo is just foward of the locker, good to keep KFC warm when heading back to Tennant Creek
