Does a cadet need straight A's?
With the QF Cadetship- I have the necessary passes for the school subject requirements...however, how important is it what grades these are...will getting B's or C's be a disadvantage to my application?
Or am I correct in thinking a pass in the subjects is ok, it just helps QF cut down on the number of applications received?
Things such as sport etc took priority at school and I knew what I needed to get into uni so my grades reflect what I needed.
Any thoughts on this much appreciated

Getting good grades in school will not necessarily guarantee you a career in the airlines.
I was brainwashed in my high school days (by parents and teachers) that good grades are the key to the world and success and that was all that mattered.
Maybe good grades are all that matter to get into a uni. course where you need a certain score (ie. law/medicine) however good grades will not necessarily guarantee success for a pilot.
The airlines look for a whole lot more than just "good grades".

I failed Yr 12 Physics at school (generally used to go for a surf instead ) but passed 1st year Physics at Uni, thus satisfying Qantas requirements.
However, during the Cadet interview, they asked the obvious (and fair enough) question why I failed at school, when I knew it was a pre-requisite for entry into QF? I stumbled on the question and they proceeded to give me a bit of a drilling.
Just be aware that lower than average marks at school can be misconstrued as lacking enthusiasm to be a Qantas pilot, which i believe is pretty unfair in some cases (not mine, I was just a slacker!).

Have mates in Airlines that are not straight A students. Don't know what qf is like. Come to think of it the kids in my school that got straight A's wouldn't fit into flying. They'd be more suited to finding a cure for cancer or building a time machine.

As the others have said, not getting straight-As certainly shouldn't preclude you from an airline job on its own...
It may well be that Q require higher academic performance from cadets simply because its an indicator that they can apply themselves to the neccessary studies and show some degree of self-discipline - bearing in mind that most applicants (for the Level 1 course especially) probably won't have the years of GA experience and flying employment references which would otherwise demonstrate this...

It is said that back in WW1 when aviation was in its infancy and the Army needed pilots for these new fangled machines, they picked horsemen for the job.
This should say something about the qualities required in a pilot. Commonsense, ability to react correctly when needed and a feel for the steed that carries you. They weren't stupid back then.
Sadly QF seem to screen applicants with a shrink test that seems hell bent on academic achievement but misses commonsense and ability to think practically. If you don't get past this test no one even looks at you again. Hopefully they will wake up one day. They could learn a lot from the Airservices ATCO applicant tests which appear to me to be more suited to finding the right people for the job. Many aspects of ATC work also apply to pilot work requirements.

I missed the cut on first go but my 'reason' of having gone and done a student exchange (life experience instead of a few marks on my HSC) was enough for recruiting bloke at the time (Capt Mac, may he rest in peace!) put me through to the next stage. It DID come up at interview and I did get in.
Sorry MoFo, not sure what that does for your theory about smarts instead of practicality but there you go.

After you've been out of school and into the "real world" for a couple of years, you will realise that school wasn't as important as you may have been lead to believe. I know for a fact that QF will take people with average grades, so long as they can prove to them that they will give it all they've got.

Cheers for the good wishes and I agree with you 100% about the "Real World" comment. I've been out in the "Real World" for a few years now and believe that I am at the top of my peer group in my current career- all that has mattered to get me this far is that I graduated from university...it hasn't mattered whether I got all distinctions or all credits for my grades...personality and common sense is what has mattered.
Fingers crossed something similar will help get my application through with QF.
