Circling at Sydney/YSSY

Looking at my Jeppesen for YSSY, it appears that circling at Sydney is restricted beyond D3.0 SY E of 16R and N of 25. However, for some approaches this changes to:

ILS DME or LOC DME 16 L No circling at all (but with an arrow pointing to RWY 25)
ILS DME PRM 16L No circling at all (but with an arrow pointing to RWY 25)
ILS or ILS DME PRM 16R No circling at all (but with an arrow pointing to RWY 25)
ILS DME PRM 34L No circling at all (no arrow pointing to RWY 25)
ILS DME or LOC DME 34R No circling at all (no arrow pointing to RWY 25)
ILS DME PRM 34R No circling at all (no arrow pointing to RWY 25)

The ILS DME or LOC DME 16R & 34L has the general circling restriction beyond D3.0 SY

Does anyone know the significance of the arrow pointing to RWY25 (if that is actually what is intended)
What is the significance of the difference between the circling/no circling requirement on 16R/34L - is it something to do with the PRM (although this principle doesn't seem to apply to 16L)?

Are we all confused now?

Circling is not allowed on 16R/34L as the runway lights are not always visible on downwind, apparently. Seems CASA are getting a bit antsy about such details at the moment (same reason night ops are not permitted at mount hotham)

As for the arrow pointing at RW25, naffed if I know.

A quick look at some of the AsA charts doesn't show an arrow pointing to Rwy25 as far as I can see.

My initial thoughts re. the circling limitations maybe due to the high obstacle area of the CBD (1065ft). This seems to be just outside the tolerances for the 16R/34L approaches, thus allowing limited circling.

For the no circling charts, I suspect that to be able to descend below the circling height of the CBD, you have to be on the ILS, otherwise you would be infringing the obstacle area.

I'm not sure why this applies to the approaches for 34R.

Wouldn't that be a night time restriction only?

Does anyone actually do circling approaches at YSSY?

Standard Bill Dana disclaimer applies........

G'day,

The arrow in the small circling inset is a little strange isn't it.

At first I thought it was simply pointing to the no circling area, as it does with the RWY 07 ILS/DME and other charts, pointing out the specific circling restrictions.

But then you quite rightly point out if you look at the 34R ILS/DME it doesn't have the arrow but the same restrictions apply (i.e. no circling at all.)

To sum it all up, I think it is just a little graphical error - nothing to worry about. No significance whatsoever to the chart. (although I stand to be corrected by those with more experience )

Having no experience with PRM ops I'm not in a position to comment on that, except that one can only assume no circling on any runway is allowed during PRM ops - which seems kinda logical to me.

Cheers,
TL

Why the hell would you consider circling at yssy?

The damn airport has ILS approaches on all runways.

Dont even think about strange and highly improbable contingencies that would have you circling at yssy.

The option is stupid and outdated.

When was the last time a 747 shot a circling approach at yssy fellas?

Anyone?

You guys are dreaming!

The reason for my asking was not that I was considering circling, per se - I am involved with a project that involves more high rise buildings to the NE of the airport and the effects of that (one of which is the possible infringement of the circling area).

As has been pointed out - who does circling approaches at YSSY?
Thanks for the observations so far...

Fair enough!

That sheds some light on the subject matter.

Goodluck.
