Interesting views. It seems most are along the same lines.

George Smith I think had a good point with the type of person going for the loans. To weed these people out would solve a few problems.

But what new Instr. would suggest to a student that he/she just ain't got the "right stuff"? Not many in the bigger schools...
Unfortunately I have done that and that person loves their new job working for a major airport company!

Another major problem has been with the technical or polytechnics who have joe public front up and want a career. Flying has the best $$ associated with it so the staff show glossy brochures with a B747 on every page or a Lear Jet taking off.
False advertising if you ask me!

Hardly the starting point for an aviator. But it hooks the young person into a huge loan and lots of $$ for the organisation.
NO career advisor interview.
NO aptitude checking.
NO referencing.
NO past record cleaning C-152/172s at the local field!

Just whammo - here's the dosh - got for it. I'll drive off in my new Monaro! Ta very much!

I don't even know if there are peroidical assessment checks and balances on these students.

Those that have suggested that loans be paid after reaching certain milestones seem good ideas.
Maybe a prospective pilot should gain his/her PPL first before being allowed to apply for a SL?

Interesting that the children of our MPs have had their whack - Jack!

Loan cut now delayed?

Can anyone confirm that the proposed cut to aviation student loans is now postponed? Is there anything in writing yet? My eavesdropping this time was not too successful. The whole process sounds a bit shambolic. Too much money was going into flying training but then aviation students will be unfairly treated compared to other training endeavours if the loans are restricted. This must have been obvious to Maharey and his tinkering lot, or has there been some serious lobbying by those who have put a lot of money into buildings etc on the basis of student loans? You just need to look at some helicopter operators at Ardmore, or at NP & TG airfields to see a lot of expenditure which has occurred post student loans.
The wings magazine had a recent article on the loans, but has there been anything in other media about the drastic effects cuts will have on aviation businesses? A strange scene.

Interesting views from all.

As one of the few who started when i was 17yo, most of you might be overlooking the fact that not every body can get an allowance for living while studying. This is where the major prt of my loan occured (and most other people whos parnts earn more than $25k between them). I admit i did get the $15k for my two years training but the rest came from working night shifts.

In other words if you have a passion for it you will find the money. Those are the people who the industry needs. given there are some who have the passion for it and get full funding, but they will be the few not worried about the impending sl cuts about to occur because they will find the money.

Good to here your comment Luke S.T. ), Mr Cullens daughter is apparently on an Eagle interview at the end of the month.

back when this thread lived I was adament I was going to give up I went down to the flying school to sign out ..

however as I was standing there I questioned my reasons and it took me seconds to realise money was the only reason I was giving up , it had nothing to do with a lack of passion for avaition.

It would be true to say I am well through with my training ATM and look to have 90 % completed within the next 8 months.

sad but true ....

If you can make it work, theres nothing sad about it..

If you finish your training, and never fly again because you don't have the drive and motivation to find a flying job and stick with the shi##y times and build those hours, as well as having a $100 K loan.. now thats sad..
