Surfing and flying
Time for a silly question
I'm interested in doing a flight down to a small airport on the Victorian coast with a mate or two, for a day of surfing. I'm interested to hear from anyone who has managed to squeeze 3 surfboards into a lighty, what plane it was etc.
For information, the boards are at max about 6'8". Any recommendations on what would be a suitable lighty to take?
TIA,
V1

I have found there is a bit of a knack to squeezing boards into light aircraft... All depends on how you hold your tounge
Normally the easiest way to start is by taking the door off, and trying to manouver it around. It really does depend on what sort of selection you have access to.
I have taken my boards 6'8 and 7'0 in a few aircraft, Fits nicley in the 180, however it has the baggage extension past the rear bulkhead, which offers a little extra depth. Cessna 206 and B58 no probs... Would be interesting to see how many others have stories and exp in the above.
Good Luck

have managed 6 board's and 2 pax in the back of a b58 ( skeg's out ), but a twin is probably to pricey, never tried any cessna singles, but a cherokee six has heaps of room down back and is plenty wide too.
What about those 206s and 7s, Have allways wondered about the size and length of the cargo pods underneath.
Some of the old bonanzas can have a conversion done to the so called hat rack in the back, making it the same size as the baron rear station, you still can't put much weight there but it gives you an extra 2 feet or so, should be ok for boards, has any one seen one of these conversion's - Beryl D Shannon in the States has then you even get a STC.

I find that a C152 works well if you use bungy cords/occa straps to attatch a board to the top of each wing. The fuel consumption goes up to about 60ltrs an hour but if the rocker is facing down the stall speed reduces to about 25kts and you can get in anywhere.
I hope you find thick lips and filthy pits,

If you can find a 206 you will piss it in .Nice big back doors , what I did was take out the back 2 right hand seats. It gives you heaps of room if need be take out the front one as well but then you have to watch fowling the controls ,but with it in 3 pax plus pilot and heaps of gear . As for the pod its big but not that big I'm 6'3" and could only just fit in ( not with my legs straight ) but couldn't breath properly once in and it took a good 15 mins to get in and out .

Mate anything from a Lance upwards would be able to fit at least a 6"4 in just use one side. Ive done it with plenty of Coffin charters. And also try Apollo Bay airstrip good access to all the good surfing spots or Geelong if you want to try the normal route. Have a good one.
