One thing that I have never quite understood about those who grumble about their pay and conditions....presumably when they started the job, they had the wits to ask what the pay and conditions were, then they presumably agreed to bend over and take what was on the table before starting work.

And if it wasn't good enough they could have kept looking. If they were good enough they woud have found other options.

IMHO the problem begins with their flying school. Presumably someone, maybe an instructor desperate enough to work for free, told them that this was normal and acceptable behaviour. Unfortunately the market is full of second rate pilots, often not their fault, they have been trained by second rate pilots. Sold the big dream, 747 on the brochure, learn to fly here and you'll get a job with Qantas, there's never been a better time to lern to fly etc etc exactly what they want to hear. Then they pop out the other end with just enough hours to be dangerous and reality bites, so they take whatever they can get, and so the wheel keeps turning and the standards keep dropping.

And you can't starve them out of existance; people who have earned the bucks to get there in general have enough self respect to not undervalue themselves. The problem lies with those who have got it all on a plate, the hand that fed them the money to do the training will continue to feed them afterwards.

Same with operators who operate at or below cost, often to offeset big bucks from somewhere else.

Sorry folks it aint going to change unless the tax office, worksafe etc get off thier butts and investigate these operators who get away with it day after day. CASA ware too busy chasing the law abiding, the others are just too hard.

Wake up and smell the coffee...
But if pilots are willing to work for free, operators should not take advantage of the situation.
You've been told previously!
Coconut Air was another classic example.
....and it makes me sick hearing ""the pulse" bantied around on this site when that trucking industry shonk McGowan has ripped this Industry further apart with his "pilot deals".
Then those pilots have the cheek to complain to QF about substandard conditions when THEY were the ones who signed Agreements, OUTSIDE the Award, UNDERCUTTING their mates and peers.

In my circles we have a name for Owner/Operators.

No tell me who's the enemy....

Perhaps there should be a central organisation to oversee that operators do pay the award wage or higher to pilots.

Easy to police, with MR's, logbooks and booking sheets crosschecked. ???

Just an idea!
