Question POMMY ATPL's

Hi folks,
It looks like my emigration process is coming to an end and I should be over to live in Australia towards the end of the year. I currently hold a UK JAR PPL fixed wing licence with a night rating. I believe this to be easily converted into an Australian licence. I also have a class one medical issued by the CAA at Gatwick. My query really concerns further training. By the time I get out to Oz I should have finished (and hopefully passed!) all of my JAR ATPL exams. If I were to stay here in the UK the route would be to :-
1) Pass exams
2) Reach 150 hrs flight time (which I will have done by Oct)
3) CPL course (25 hours in UK)
4) Multi I/R (55 Hr course)
5) MCC course
6) Hours Build and job hunting

Is this the same route to take in Australia?
The big question---- Can I convert my ATPL credits into Australian ATPL credits or will I have to do it all again?

Also any good schools around Melbourne for CPL stuff?

Already tried CASA with no reply, but hope someone can help me out!
Regards
CB

You'll have a CPL/IR with ATPL credits in the UK.
This can be converted to an Oz CPL/IR with a minimum of fuss and expense. I think you'll need to do a bridging exam plus Air Law to convert your CPL. I'm not sure re the IR (known as the command IR or C/IR here). You won't have too much flying to do.
There's no need for the MCC in Oz.
Now, the bad news. All that effort to do the JAR ATPL is not cross credited. You'll need to do the Oz ones. Note, they aren't as mind numbingly frustrating as the JAR ones but they aren't a walk in the park. (can knock them over in 2 months)
Now, get yourself over here and get it done. Get a job (yeah, that's the tough part) and keep an eye on your JAR ATPL credits. When it's appropriate, scoot back to the UK and wave the log book/Aus ATPL/JAR CPL with the JAR ATPL credits in their face and get a JAR ATPL. Oh, and don't forget your money.....

Having experienced both the Oz system and the UK/JAR system, you'll find the Oz system a breath of fresh air.

Oh I should add.
Yeah, it's a similar path that you've described.
The IR is not mandatory to get a job. Many don't for the first couple of years of flying. Esp if up in the "bush". However, it is becoming more and more common to have a CPL/IR.
As stated, no requirement for a MCC. No one here would know what you are talking about. Another crazy JAR rip off.
With your freshly minted CPL you'd either get an instructor rating or head off into the wild (north) west and look for a job. It's not known as hour building.

Other major differences. You can't log command time in the right seat. (ie the UK/JAR P1 US). So you won't be pitching up to the regionals here with 250 hours and expect a lash at their Dash 8. In fact, you'll need several thousand hours and quite a few thou command on twins. Low capacity RPT (airline) requires 500 hours command on twins before you can go to the left seat. Don't worry, you don't need 500 hours multi crew to get the Oz ATPL.
Qantas appears to be the exception and only requires a min of 500 hours command (on any thing). (Cadet schemes excepted)

Ta for reply redsnail. Knew you would come up with the goods. Thought that would be the case on the exam situation, so looks like a little more work for me.
Shaablamm, I aint going to Oz to look for a flying job, I am going for a better life all round, and just hoping I can pick up a flying job along the way.
Any of you folks got recommendations on schools in Vic for training?

no comparison with the quality of life. It is much much better in Oz no doubt. I can't really help you with flying school in Melbourne, hopefully someone else will help you out there.
Shifting to the other side of the world is something not to be taken lightly. Do as I do and look at it as a positive thing and really get into the local scene as much as possible.
Ok, this may lead to liver failure but hey, you've enjoyed yourself and that's the main thing.

Honestly, with the right attitude, you'll have a ball.

Sorry CB I was just having a little unco-operative dig.

However if you really want quality of life and you are probably sick of the UK wx then I would give Vic a wide berth mate. Other than Tas I couldn't think of a place in Oz that resembles the UK more than Melbourne.

Get yourself up to Sydney, Brisbane or go and join all the other Brits in Perth. The housing is cheaper over there and the government actually encourages you to move there opposing the moves to the Sydney area.

As for flying training in Vic there are tons of schools down there. The majority of flying training is done at Morrabin airport. GFS (General Flying Services) are a major down, probably like a smaller version of Oxford or Cabair (much smaller) but they do train to a high level. There are alot of other schools down there mate but alas I'm not from there so I'm not the one to give you to much advice.

I would just get on the net and see if you can get into Morrabin airport and see if they have a site. Maybe this will help.

C ya

What a whole load of unadulterated cr@p!!! If you should choose to check the verifiable statistics you will see that throughout the year Melbourne gets more hours of sunshine that Sydney!!!

Victoria is a beautiful state and you would be hard pressed to compare it with the crappy UK weather in ANY season. Winter here is like an English spring, Autumn here is like an English summer, and that is in Gippsland, the centre of the dairy industry and prone to more average rainfall than the rest of the state.

Shaablamm, you really should get out more!!!

Ok folks, location, location, location!
Far as I'm concerned anywhere is better than UK at moment.
95% chance it will be Melbourne as it looks like I am getting a state government sponsorship. So gotta stay there for 2 years.
After couple of years its prob a move to Brissy, as I got Mrs CB to think about and she loves to sunbathe topless in the winter.
Always sticking them spaniels ears out in the sun.

I've also spent a few months in each so I sort of know both of them and each have quality living.

Bare tits??

Havn't seen any since venturing to the southern hemisphere (hasten to add I mean in public on a beach, my missus does parade around the house topless, post shower, etc)

I have a map for some nice beaches in NZ should your other half wish to 'pop out'

Seriously though, it is a big move (I moved to NZ two years ago next week) - don't go overboard with buying everything with your UK £'s - keep a secure stash in the UK just in case. Beware the bank charges - never seen anything like them - where did my free charges and free £500 overdraft go? (they have nowt like that)

Beware the sun - burns quickly - and I take a case of water - you might need it as Aussie has been a little dry of late.
