Lame
I am a PPL holder wishing to become a LAME in avionics.
I have no experience in the field, many people have said different stories about getting into the industrie, and i would like to have a professional advice from someone that has done it.
Thanks!!!!

LAME
Best advice I can think of is to go to your local airport and talk to the Electrical, Radio and Instrument LAMES. Try to do some work experience with them, even if it means doing other non avionics work as well. That will give you an idea of the type of work involved and the environment, which can help in the decision making process.
Also try the Air Force, they provide training under reasonable pay conditions (as far as I understand, not been there myself). Theres is a lack of licenced E, I &R lames, so getting qualified is a guaranteed job opportunity!
Good luck

Pippolo ,
You have a head start to begin with as you live in Brisbane.
My son ,also ppl ,and blew all his cpl money on a car and jetski, then decided to become a Lame.
Just forget the name of the set up ,but it is a 10 month course near the airport---------i think now at the airport ,and for QLD people it is under a grand for the year.Interstate and overseas people have to pay about 10 grand.
He did well in the course and towards the end everyone fills out applications for Qantas. Also along the way others come up which you can apply for but his aim was Qantas.
He got the Qantas one and they payed expenses down there ,give you free rented furnitue for a month until yours arrives or you buy ,pay half the rent for 6 months and pay the bond money. If your single they will arrange accomodation with other intakes to keep the costs down.
That year in Brisbane doing the course cuts a year off the apprenticeship.
Hes 23 so is an adult apprentice, but still cleard $480 a week, which is not really enough to go ape on as his house cost $280 a week. But after a couple of weeks of all the induction crap,he was put on a shift working with the guys and now clears $700 a week ,plus a bit of overtime brings in more.
But the all important thing------he loves it.
He.s working on becoming a LAME on as many machines as possible, and when a lame showed him his pay slip he was even more keen----2,500 clear for the fortnight.
.Any more info ,give me a PM,and i will try and find the name of place.
best of luck

The road to becoming a well paid/ respectable positioned LAME is long, rocky and has unexpected twists and turns.
You could be lucky and get in with the big players first up, or slog through GA and regionals for a few years, it took me 15.
The positives- if you've got the determination, you'll make it. (It's harder to make the big time than it is for Pilots. )
The rewards at the end of the day are well worth it, both the pay and the job satisfaction.
Go for it, and yes stick with Avionics.....
