Question Australian Army Fixed Wing Pilots

Hi all.

I'm wondering what the situation is with the army pilots who fly the king air and twotter. I notice that in contrast to the RAAF’s king airs the army aircraft have VH registration. Does this mean the aircrews need civvy licences?

Just looking to expand my knowledge here.

As far as I know, they have to have CPLs and command instrument ratings under the civvy regs, and use (or have previously used) some civil check and training pilots to carry out endorsements and checks, as well as in-house check and training.
That applies for all civil-registered machines that are used by the military, such as the King Airs (and 1900s now I think) used by 32 SQN for Nav training at Sale.
For machines that are on the military register, they don't need civil licenses or ratings, but use the usual military training and checking systems.
As an aside, a military pilot who has passed a post-wings operational conversion course becomes eligible for issue of a CPL (A or H as applicable) on application. Instrument and instructor ratings don't carry over in the same way, although there are significant exemptions re courses of training.

Is it just a rumour or does Wings and operational conversion equal a CPL anyway? Not sure where I heard that but it has been kicking away in the back of mind!

CASA has determined that ADF pilots who have graduated from one of the following ADF courses hold a qualification at least equivalent to a private pilot licence:

PPL (aeroplane) 1FTS (ARA), 2FTS, AFTC(A) or SAA(F/W) AFTC(H) or ADFHS

PPL (helicopter) AFTC(H), ADFHS or SAA(R/W)

As a consequence, graduates of the above courses may be isued the relevant PPL without further examination. They must, however, meet the experience requirements set out in the CAR for the licence.

ADF flight crew who subsequently complete their operational conversion are eligible for the relevant commercial pilot licence provided they satisfy the experience requirements for the licence.
