I'm after some WAC &/or topographic charts of PNG. Does anyone know where I can get them in OZ?

Have just ordered ONC charts 1:1million for a VERY obscure part of the world from http://www.netstoreusa.com/maps/welcome.shtml

Excellent service, ordered through the fax of the Sydney number.

Chart arrived about 2 weeks later.

Cost A$32.10

In PNG they normally use ONC (or TPC) charts.

Um yep thanks BCL, I know that, those charts fall under the generic term 'topographic'. The original question remains: 'Where can I get them?"

Having spent some time in PNG in many years gone by I remember a senior pilot having a set of WAC charts for PNG.
They dated back to 1978 and apparently sometime after independence (as the story goes) the plates were either smashed or damaged so no more WAC charts.

I too was bitterly disappointed but got use to the ONC/TPC's quickly.

Amazing how after a few years you dont even need a map alot of the time but always kept it with me just in case,

Best wishes

Sorry Mr McGoo

I got no idea where you can get PNG ONC charts in Oz.

I only know where you can get them in PNG - "The mapping Bureau" in Port Moresby.

They may have a website, but I doubt it. Last time I bought TPC and ONC from them, they cost K15 each... highway robbery, of course - specially when you consider that ALL of them are still labelled as "Edition 1"!

Best of luck to you!

When I was in PNG a couple of years ago I spent the first 6 months without a map. Searched high and low for a map of the Morobe Province (they had sold out 3 years earlier at the DCA). I ended up "borrowing" the chief pilots map from the 70's and colour photocopying it. Put contact on it and it served me well for the rest of my time in PNG

Mr McGoo; If you're SA based try The Map Shop in Adelaide. They once told me that they had a few PNG ONC charts and could possibly order others. They did mention that any chart showing part of Irian Jaya was on a restricted list! A bit crazy considering the set I bought in PNG when I was with DZ showed a fair chunk of it.
Hope this helps.

Real crazy Pinky because it's possible to get ONCs here that show ALL of Irian Jaya, or whatever the hell it's called these days. Mind you, the survey data mightn't be any more up to date than those for PNG...

According to several map shops that used to sell PNG topographical aviation charts apparently the Australian Defence Force has tried to ban the sale of these charts from all retail outlets worldwide except PNG although the RAAF AIS advertises PNG ONC's. Some stores had to withdraw their stock from sale but others were still selling their last remaining stocks or bringing them in from mysterious sources. Two suppliers in Sydney were still selling a few of the PNG ONC's and TPC's last year for about A$20 each:
Concept Aviation Supplies, 621 Airport Avenue, Bankstown NSW 2200, (02) 97910222.
Map Centre Parramatta, 440 Church Street (Cnr Grose St), North Parramatta NSW 2151, (02) 98902080.
Several websites overseas still claim to sell PNG charts but possibly the cheapest source of 'current' charts these days may be the National Mapping Bureau in Moresby, located on Melanesian Way in Waigani, just up from the big pineapple. Most of the aeronautical info on these charts is about 1980 vintage, so if you want airstrip locations you'll find that many of the strips shown are now closed and of course all the 'new' strips are not shown but Bill Purcell has kindly put online his PNG Airstrip Guide 2001. According to the National Mapping Bureau they currently have all 4 PNG ONC's and most TPC's for K15 each, stocks are imported from the Australian Defence Force, overseas mail order is available for K5 per chart. They don't supply charts for West Papua but ONC M13 covers a fair bit of it although large chunks are blank and labelled 'Relief data incomplete'. The National Mapping Bureau also sells the complete PNG TPC set on CD-ROM, price on application. Geoscience Australia also advertises PNG topographical charts.
According to the NMB website their contact details are:
National Mapping Bureau,
PO Box 296,
Waigani, NCD,
Papua New Guinea.
Phone: (675) 3276459, 3276467, 3276967
Fax: (675) 327 6460
