Have been considering this myself of late. Looks like the cheapest option. There is a requirement for a certain amount of direct supervised study I believe..... Does anyone else have any idea ?
The cost is still pretty steep to do the actual flying part. I have roughly estimated $20,000-$25,000 though this depends on your experience level.

Rat around GID 25 in the CAA-SRG's website. You'll need Acrobat Reader to access it.
It takes some reading and you have to read it closely. I mean ALL of it to get a clear-ish picture of what's required.
Distance learning does limit your risk. You should (might even have to) do the brush up 2 week courses. Well worth it and definitely helps you get through the exams.
Knowing the state of play over here unless you have some reasonable turbine time I wouldn't bother. Also, the cost is prohibitive if you haven't got 500 hours multi crew time.
