Alternative Aviation Jobs
Just wanting people's suggestions on other positions in aviation instead of flying. I was a charter pilot though now have skills and qualifications in Business and IT.
I would appreciate any genuine suggestions that I can put my aviation knowledge, and new qualifications and experience in Business and IT to use.

If you don't mind living in Canberra or working for CASA their webpage has a number of jobs which business and IT qualifications would be a plus.

Java, a 'pattern' is a bunch of flights put together to make a trip. It will take into account all CAOs, award limits, some 'humanising' rules and so on. A whole bunch of different 'patterns' then make up your roster which is called (duh) a 'pattern line'. Rosters without any patterns are (duh) a 'blank line'.
There is often a degree of criticism at QF about the quality of both individual patterns (which could have anywhere between two and 20ish sectors of flying on them) and the pattern lines that are put together.
As an example, the machine recently spat out HKG-MEL-SYD sectors for a 13:50 tour of duty. Doesn't sound too hard with a three man crew but when you sign on at about 2200 EST and go all night the complexion changes a bit. That would be a gripe against the system.

The QF system is actually sold either by QF or the Preston Group to other airlines. There is a european system, and then there is the the well known US system that is used by VB (Sabre).
I have seen a paper on the QF system, quite impressive on the level of optimisation it gies into, and the number of constraints it handles. Dont remember seeing a common sense constraint.

Appreciate the problem Java. The trouble is that "aviation related" jobs in Sydney are fairly rare, and when they do come up you have to be careful not to be trampled in the stampede. Even then they're mostly not particularly well paid. My advice would be research some of the larger companies who need people to run the business rather than running it themselves, target a role and see if you can network yourself inside.
If you purchase "The Australian" on Fridays and have a look in the aviation jobs section there are more positions in there than the flying jobs than Windy posts here of a Friday. This should give you an idea of what roles come up from time to time and qualifications they are looking for.
