The Pilgrimage
Hi All
Just about to finish my MECIR and then make the all important pilgrimage up north. I am planning on driving from Melbourne to Broome was wondering if anyone has done the trip. Also which way did you go via Perth or through the middle...
Also if anyone is interested I am leaving around Arpil 1 if you care to join...

I'm from Perth, and will be driving there on Tuesday. From Perth, it takes two days of driving (about 11.5 hours each day without breaks).
If you're lucky enough to get a place to stay near the airport, than a car isn't THAT necessary. I'm planning on buying a bicycle when I get up there. Additionally, there are so many pilots up there that borrowing a car wouldn't seem out of the realms of possiblity.
Anyway, something for you to think about....

Drive if you can (i.e. is your car appropriate to drive big distances in remote areas, and can you afford it). Take your time if you do drive cause there are plenty of things to do and see along the way. You may not get the chance to return to many of the places you drive though so don’t make the mistake of passing them by aiming solely for covering max km’s in a day. You will no doubt have some great stories to tell the folks back home by the end of the journey (take a stack of photos or nobody will believe you!).
Not sure about Broome, but in most other Kimberly towns you are going to pay up big for second hand cars (especially if you are after a 4WD).
If you do chose to leave as late as April, expect there to already be heaps of hopefuls up there putting in the hard yards.

I'm pretty sure most companies up this way want most of their hiring out of the way by April, after all thats when the tourist season officially (well sort of) kicks off. I'd be inclinded to get up here a bit earlier. Good luck to all.
Dave, I had to have a bit of a chuckle about that landcruiser about this time last year in Kunna's, a blue one wannit? .....
Still got the traily?, sounds like the best option for the dry, but the wet? Ya mad, ya ba$tard!
I'll return that email you sent after a couple more bundies, don't expect anything too coherent......
Regards,
OpsN.

Ah Dave...the memories!
Will get around to making a decent photo album one day soon and you will be one of the first to see it mate. When you back in Ku*tlessnurra? Was my one year this week in The Crack, and I think I still have my sanity - or not? Give me a call and tell me some good Sydney stories when u get a chance.
OpsNormal - hope AS is treating you well. Still trying to score myself a charter down that way, I keep missing out!
Ang - I think April is leaving it a little too late. From last reports there was already 2 or 3 guys in Broome looking for work. Not sure about Kununurra though I'd imagine there is half a dozen already. Having a car is definitely an advantage, especially if you need to get somewhere quickly (i.e. for a job!) The other thing to consider is that one of the companies in Broome won't be touching anyone with less than 500hrs this year, unless they really need to. Just a thought.
Any for those who love their creature comforts, Broome Maccas is now open!
Anyone wanting some more info on how fun and enjoyable the pilgrimage can be, drop me a pvt message.
Cheers,
TL

Memories.
Did a similar drive many yrs ago. From MEL, destination DRW via QLD. Route then was to fuel up at '3 ways', then up to Katherine. Tillair was the choice company in those days. Little did I know that at 22 I was too old.
No joy after reaching DRW, so I drove back down the Stuart HWY and decided to give Yulara a miss. Hit the then infamous South Road to ADL. What a nightmare corrigated ride that was. Back in MEL 14 days after departure.
Car covered in red dust, driving lights gone thanks to a roo near Charlieville and my wallet rather empty.
A month later I get a call, based on a written application. A job for me in Yulara... Aviation's like this.
Good luck with your potential journey.

OpsN,
It’s all about big gay yellow rain coats and positive thinking.
TL,
No idea as of yet but I still have half a block of surf wax to get through……
For those making the trek, good luck and have a stack of fun!
