Some discussion as to where pilots stand in relation to the average weekly earnings in OZ. It may shock a few of you!!!

If 48 people earn $ 30,000 pa and 2 earn $ 300,000 pa the average (Mean) is $40,800 pa. Is this a true reflection of what people are earning?

Well I don't know where I stand but I am a full time C210 driver, I make $46,000 and year, with $250 per week travelling allowance, free accomodation and car.

Why is it that the mean is always used for things like income, housing prices etc etc instead of median.
I believe what most people earn or spend is more appropriate than the average.

Guys, could someone please give me an idea of how much on average(mean) it costs to live in Brisbane per month for your
average family i.e. 2 adults, 2 kids under 8yrs, excluding
mortgage. I am doing the career vs. lifestyle weigh up and
although I realise money is not the primary goal in this debate,
however, I will still need to be a self-funded retiree in 20yrs or
so. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You seem to be on a very good wicket, are you the Cheif pilot on that as well? I was on 44K flying a Twotter single pilot in Oz. No allowances at all.
Atleast though now I am clearing more than the above.

IMHO these stats are misleading. They reflect taxable income only and are not a true reflection of what a lot of people are earning.
How many thousands of Doctors/Lawyers/Business owners pay themselves a salary of $59,000 (taxable) while their practice/business reaps $250,000 ?
I think the published average is dragged down by all those on welfare and high earning individuals earning a modest TAXABLE INCOME.
The figures are good for the government as most people think they aren't doing too badly compared to others so paying 48.5% tax is easier to swallow.
You only have to look around at the local marina and see millions of dollars worth of yachts/boats which proves that a lot of people are wealthy.

It may not match the figures above, however I earn $42,000 gross p/a (no allowances) for a charter company. Only recently started flying IFR, only a bit before that did I start flying twins.
And most importantly when the ops manual says it's quiting time

Hang on a minute, stuff the money I love the job, besides there isn't anything else to do up this way!

Averages...
The most common average figure referred to is the "mean", which as has been explained, very misleading. The most pertinent figure is the "mode", where the greatest portion of the sample lie - i.e. the middle of the bell curve.
I think for Australia the mode lies at somewhere around $27,000. So, no need to cut wrists based on the "mean". (Maybe for other reasons such as crappy conditions, but not the mean wage comaprison!)
