2003 Outback Air Safari
The Outback Air Race which raises funds for the RFDS is now being run by the RFDS themselves. Details are available in my post at the bottom of P3 of the Oz Bash 2003 - The Outback Air Race part, in PPRuNe Bashes. I'm not much good at posting links, you would probably end up on a "Knit your Own Parachute from Baling Twine" site if I did. :o
So far we have one PPRuNe girls team: RV6, myself and a friend who has yet to get her PPRuNe name and half a PPRuNe lads team -Wiz! OzExpat cannot now take part unfortunately. Wiz needs a drinking mate.... er sorry, a co-pilot. Any volunteers or are you all too scared of being beaten by the girls?
Woomera, I'm not sure where this should be posted so feel free to put it in whichever forum you think most apt.
Wombat, your post and thread are just fine in this forum. May I also commend to all PPRuNers their support for any RFDS fund raising efforts.

And daisy just got painted so my drinking partner will be traveling in style. (dont worry about the being beaten by girls thingy,(unless they tie us first of course, and talk dirty whilst they do it) It will never happen).

Dear me Wiz, are you threatening to use underhand tactics to try to sabotage us Well that is one thing we girls will certainly NOT resort to.
FREEWHEEL I have tried to send you two PMs but am not sure that they have been sent properly. If you didn't get them please email me: [email protected] I have a message for you from Michelle at the RFDS

Well, the entry is in, Michelle finally got her hands on Wiz's money and the Safari starts on 16th August. There will be a special website set up for it by the RFDS so you can keep an eye on what is happening to everyone. I will have my camera and laptop with me and will endeavour to post suitably incriminating evidence... er I mean some photos of the event. I will post the url for the website here once I have it. Various PPRuNe Chat lurkers have asked me to write a diary as I go along. If I am able to do so I will put it in Jet Blast as it is a very long way for them to travel from the UK to Dunnunda It is an all PPRuNe team at the moment consisting of Wiz, myself and Daisy3, although we may yet have someone else joining us. Keep cheering us on please - oh and Juliet Whiskey too if she is competing, she may be a rival but she is also a PPRuNer

Sounds good, if we could get the tiger over to WA we'd join you
We're blasting off out bush in Qld for our RFDS trip. Leaving on the 15th Aug
Enjoy.

Sorry for the delayed reply, I was on my way out from the UK.
jerrryIt is indeed the West Australia one 1967nm around West Oz in 11 days. It's a shame you can't join us but good luck with your trip. I have no idea how far you can travel in one stretch in a Tiger Moth, but the longest sector in this year's event is 332nm from Truscott to Broome. Maybe you could take part in the next one. Details will be available from Michelle, [email protected]
Bendo I'll be back in the UK by then but it looks good. Hope you enjoy it.
Back to the toy parrot making now for me. We still have money to raise for the RFDS

G'day WIZ
Got a look at ol daisy during one of the stop overs. She is looking heaps better to when I knew her from a few years ago. The new make up on her looks great. Good to see her still getting around.

G'day Titan, she could have done with a wash for most of the trip (thanx Mike aka slim DUSTY), but she is still an old sweety. never missed a beat on the whole trip.
Ozex...........Goooorngit, ya bugga.
Well the race is over now and we are all on the way home. When I get a few mins over the next couple of days I will post a bit about this great event, I managed to get a bunch of photos and will publish a few of these as well.

We are back, Daisy was GREAT! Wiz won what was probably the most difficult leg but I'll let him tell you all about it. Hope the Tiger Moth event went well.
PS: Stallie, we heard you on the radio as we were on our way down from Leonora to YPJT. You would have arrived there about 45 mins before we did.

No Woomera, not as old as some who inhabit this place and who are especially partial to Cessnas... But I can never forget any of the aircraft that were "ol' floozies" in the days when I was flying them!
Great result anyway wiz... I'll be lookin forward to yer victory shout when I get there! And a huge welcome back to DX and that other Daisy crew member!

What a remarkable event this has been!!! Eleven days of sheer lunacy and major fun in the outback. We have flown over some of the most incredible territory and stayed at some of the most beautiful places. Sandfire where we slept out under the stars, Truscott where we walked through the wreckage of a Liberator that crashed on take off, Broome, the pearl capital of the world, Wooleen Station - a working cattle station open to visitors and full of quirky little surprises.
We have flown over the Bungles, swooped low over the coastline to get a closer look at a huge crocodile, seen the immense Lake Argyle, done a little impromptu cattle mustering (in a three tonne twin )
We have fundraised along the way by all sorts of inventive means ... one imaginative crew member managing to charge drivers a departure tax to leave the hotel car park!!! We have made new friends and gone our separate ways promising to have regular reunions.
And we have been lucky enough to have flown with a gifted pilot who really is a wizard with aircraft. Many thanks, Wiz, you're a star. Same again in two years???
