Those buildings were not there a year ago, it used to be aircraft parking. Would be nice if the airport focused a little more on aviation and not property development.

That was very close.

Looking at the shadow converging across the roof onto the aircraft that was very close! Other tech savvy members will no doubt compute the altitude..

The pilot landed on N. A NOTAM was released indicating N1 is closed due to a disabled aircraft. That info was broadcast on the ATIS about 45 mins ago and has since been deleted. From the footage, looks as though he flew close enough to along Surrey Avenue, over the 7/11 servo at the intersection of Marion Street and of course, the non aviation buildings then landed on N and ended up just in N1. What an effort

Great decision making skills. Gear Up and they stuck with the decision. It’s one of the toughest calls to make but they did it and it has likely saved the day.

Will be interesting to find out how the helicopter/drone video of the approach during the forced landing happened to be taken. Presumably a coincidental right place/right time.

News crew must feel lucky to be in just the right place and time to take that footage.

Aviation Safety Network link in 1st post has a FlightAware link showing flight path of VH-MYW. Looks like problem emerged some distance west of the airport. Track ends before it was at the airport but pilot must have made right turn thereafter to reach any available clear area:

A happy ending.

I know the 9 chopper lives in a hangar in N1. It may have been returning from somewhere and coincidentally was in the right place at the right time. Additionally, the pilot and his partner were briefly interviewed by reporter Mark Burrows from 9 news.

The pilot said the aircraft clipped a tree on the way in. It was probably the large tree just before the 7/11.

I would dearly like to know if he pulled the pitch to full coarse to lengthen the glide? I always had that in the back of my mind and did try it on a normal approach once and it did appear to add distance but no idea how much it would have helped and fortunately I never had to find out.

I watch the Channel 7 video and the pilot did a fantastic job.
Really pays to have a headset and a PTT eh. Hope the damage was minimal apart from the engine rebuild and he and she, MYW, are back flying soon.

Mmm, i did think he really was close to that tree...

Reminds me of the Turkish AF Transall crash last year. Sheer will power keeping it aloft...

The commercial channels share the chopper, spoke to the pilot (nice chap).
