CASA Class 1 Medical initial/renewal

Hi all

Had a look in the CASA website, apologies if I've missed something obvious.

When does a Class 1 Medical become un-renewable due length of time expired therefore a new initial issue Class 1 (and the additional tests) would be required?

Unless changed I believe it's 3 months but unable to find any reference.

More a consideration for under 60yo than over 60yo probably, I also understand the renewal cannot be executed by the DAME but have to wait for CASA assessment of the application.

Thanks
Cheers

I’m about to renew my Class 1, after 3.5 years abroad. I was told by CASA “up to 5 years” is just a renewal, with the required aged related items. I’m doing next week, so I will report back after that.

cheers

Hi Switchbait

Thanks for that, hope all goes well.

I find it strange that it's 5 years - after 2 years you have neither a Class 1 or Class 2 yet because you once held a Class 1 in the dim dark past it's just a renewal.

One of the CASA mysteries to me!

Cheers

I called up CASA with a similar question this week and they were surprisingly helpful, so try that. You shouldn't have to do a full on initial again, but you will have to do the age related tests, so might pay to check those and renew at a strategic time (eg if I renew before my next birthday I won't need to do any test, but will if I renew after).

The key dates are: you must get your Class 1 renewed within 28 days of expiry if you want to keep your original expiration date. You can renew after this but the date changes.
You must renew your Class 1 within 3 months of your expiry if you want the DAME to be able to revalidate your medical on the spot. If you renew after this date, it has to go through CASA for approval, they said their processing times are currently about six weeks.

Can't speak to extra rules for over 60 year olds.
