News Just In....

Three people from New South Wales have been arrested at Coober Pedy after allegedly breaching COVID-19 border rules.
A private plane departed Griffith, NSW, on 24 June and landed in Coober Pedy – the trio then attempted to fly into the Northern Territory yesterday afternoon but were denied entry.
A 39-year-old woman, 21-year-old woman and 27-year-old man were arrested and charged at a Coober Pedy karaoke bar around midnight after being identified.
They were refused police bail and will face court on Monday.

Alternatively, they'll more likely be charged with breaking pretty well-known laws that have been around for well over a year now in various forms, and anyone planning to travel interstate should probably take 30 seconds to check?

Perhaps they should have spent their weekend breaking and entering, after all its a lesser crime than travelling from one covid free regional area to another

Not saying that this is the case, but I know when I am out doing big trips the last thing I look at is the news. Many times I will be camping under the wing at small isolated airports and could go 3 or 4 days before really talking to anyone. This all happened pretty quickly so unless they admit that they knew it is still possible that they are so tied up in their travels and their adventure that they didn't know anything about lockdowns....

PS. with their social media posts I would say this is not the case because they would still be receiving information, but for Old Fart's without social media and the need to be updating everybody about what they have eaten for their previous meal, it is possible that there could still be people out there flying around and having an adventure and still don't know about lockdowns

I know this is not strictly aviation related however also there are plenty of people driving/caravanning around the country that would have no idea about recent news events ( including lockdowns)

No doubt at all about that, fortunately with the role out of patrol cars with number plate recognition these criminals will be brought to heel soon too.

However cases like this young bloke flying around the country in a private aircraft require a swift priority response from the police force. He was apparently also traveling in the company of not one but two young women and all three caught red handed in a karoke bar in Coober Pedy around midnight. There is a high probability that some of the trio might have consumed alcohol too. Who knows to what level of further fun these three could have got up to if the brave police officers had not intervened before last drinks.

Close call indeed, hopefully the trio can be rehabilitated before they get a serious addiction to fun.

Car and caravan don’t travel as fast as a plane . It feasible a light plane could get from lockdown Sydney to WA quickly . A NSW registered car and caravan caught in port headland probably was not in Sydney or Darwin the day before .

Why use Germany as the analogy? What about war torn Britain, which in 1942 was more war torn than Germany and still struggling with the Battle of the Atlantic. In war torn Britain children were taken from their families, you couldn't drive a car wherever or whenever you wanted, the government specified how much clothing you could buy and limited how much food you could purchase. Horror of all horrors, if you owned an aeroplane the Government took it from you and used it for their own purposes. All this at a time when "our forefathers were fighting for our freedoms." That's what democratic countries do when faced with a nationwide challenge. Whether you as an individual agree with it is irrelevant. If you want to enjoy the freedoms that "our forefathers fought for", then you have to accept and follow the restrictions that the Government deems necessary to keep the wider community safe. If you don't agree with it then you have the privilege of voting them out of office. If you think that you can just do whatever you like because you have access to an aircraft then the authorities will fill inform you of what your rights actually are.

Exactly. I have the same amount of sympathy for these clowns as I do for someone jumping in their car and trying to cross closed borders.

ie. None.

MCoates:
Area and Head Office Notams list the websites for international, and domestic border restrictions, and recommend pilots and passengers check the state and territory websites for further travel restrictions.
Not watching the news, and existing in your own social media bubble is one thing.
Not reading NOTAMS is - for a pilot - an entirely different kettle of fish. If a pilot is not reading NOTAMs, what else are they not reading / doing?

I also note that the intrepid trio flew from Coober Pedy into Ayers Rock, When turned away from Ayers Rock, FlightAware shows they flew on to Alice Springs before returning to Coober Pedy. So not quite the innocent "oh whoops we crossed the state border and we didn't know it was closed to travellers like us". Ayers Rock has Avgas, so why continue onto Alice...unless, of course, they thought they could get away with it?

With hindsight, they probably dodged a bullet by being refused entry to the NT.

If Delta is as infectious as claimed, the next few weeks here are going to be interesting. Possibly making up for our missing out up to date.
