Jetstar vs Tiger

Im sure this has been flogged to death in the past but how does it pan out for 2019?

Jetstar vs Tiger - Sydney base new hire FO.
  1. Take home monthly pay comparison. Basic salary, flight pay (say 900hr year) and average call outs
  2. Days off. Lifestyle choice options

Basically whats the best of the two gigs. And yes.... before the haters start I understand neither is great

Thanks in advance.

I think Jetstar are in EB negotiations at the moment like Qantas Mainline so I’m not sure if their take home pay would be one to make your decision on, as I can’t imagine them signing a deal that’s less than Tigers.

Mind you anything domestic based out of Sydney would drive me nuts !!

Both are great jobs. Obviously a busy port to be based out of. I know people in both companies and bases and they’re generally happy. JQ monthly hours have stabilised.

Pay. JQ FO 7.5K -8.5k in the hand per month.

Tiger has less overnights only 6 weekly Perth and sign on and offs are not as early and late as Jetstar.

On another note, you pay the Airbus rating but in 2 years are you also paying 737 rating when the fleet conversion hits Sydney? That’s a potential expensive future burden.

Getting comfortable on the Airbus is one thing, but then learning the 737 after a year or two if it’s your first jet can be a overwhelming for some.

"IF" you are young have a choice go with Tigers, suck up the crap conditions/rudderless ship mentality & get both ratings (B737 & A320) put a few hours under yr belt & get the hell out of there, the world will then be yr oyster!
Good luck, trust me you'll need it:-):-)

That's Tigers all over !

BASE PAY

Tiger Base Pay Dec 1 2019

Captain - $220,375
FO Level 1 - $121,206 (years 1-2 inclusive)
FO Level 2 - $141,040 (years 3 -5 inclusive)
FO Level 3 - $147,651 (year 6+

Jetstar Base Pay 1 Dec 2019 (Assuming the standard Qantas 3% increase - current rates are 3% less than this, but up for negotiation)

Captain - $206,837
FO Level 1 - $113,761 (years 1-4 inclusive)
FO Level 2 - $124,102 (year 5)
FO Level 3 - $134,444 (year 6+)

Jetstar FO’s base salary in years 3 and 4 $113,761 compared to Tiger FO salary in the same years of $141,040. Difference of $27,279 p/a.

OVERTIME

Tiger overtime (1 Dec 2019)

Captain - $185
FO Level 1 - $92.50
FO Level 2 - $92.50
FO Level 3 - $92.50

Per hour for all flight / credit above 60 hours / month

Jetstar overtime 1 Dec 2019 (Assuming the standard Qantas 3% increase)

Captain - $262.82
FO Level 1 - $144.55
FO Level 2 - $157.69
FO Level 3 - $170.83

Per hour for all flight / credit above 75 hours / month

HIGHLINE

Tiger

Nil

Jetstar

Captain - $11.18
FO Level 1 - $6.15
FO Level 2 - $6.71
FO Level 3 - $7.26

Paid for every duty hour (works out to be around 6% of base pay). But you give up 50% of the company performance bonus, and have 8 available days (extra standby).

DAYS OFF

Tiger

137 Designated Days Off (DDO) per annum

DDOs are on a fixed 5 on 3 off rotation – very predictable.

Fixed roster results in a minimum of 13 weekends off per annum (all long weekends)

Buffer periods around 3 DDOs of a minimum of 80 hours.

Jetstar

132 Designated Days Off (DDO) per annum

DDOs are allocated on a fully flexible roster where pilots can request days off but the most common roster note is ‘requested day off removed due coverage’.

Single DDOs can be rostered.

Buffer periods around 2 consecutive DDOs of 54 hours (you can sign off at 11pm Friday and be back at work 0500 Monday) or 78 hours around 3 consecutive DDOs.

Minimum 9 weekends off per annum

PROGRESSION

Tiger

Group Date of Joining List – New recruits join the Virgin Group list (GDOJ), which will allows promotion into Virgin mainline (subject to various criteria – freeze periods, maximum attrition etc) on their seniority number.

Jetstar

Promotion into Qantas mainline requires a pilot go through the entire Qantas selection process as if they are a new recruit to the Qantas group, resign from Jetstar and start at the bottom of the Qantas list.

Both companies pay credit for sim duties, annual leave, emergency procedures training, security training, admin etc etc. If you factor in a pilot doing the standard 4 days of sim per annum, Eps, DGs, Security etc, 6 weeks of annual leave and 800 hours flying per annum the total package looks like this:

Tiger

Captain - $256,232
FO Level 1 - $139,830
FO Level 2 - $159,664
FO Level 3 - $166,275

Jetstar

Captain - $229,837 ($26,714 less than Tiger)
FO Level 1 - $126,830 ($13,595 less than Tiger)
FO Level 2 - $137,711 ($21,953 less than Tiger)
FO Level 3 - $149,187 ($17,088 less than Tiger)

And for 750 flying hours per annum

Tiger

Captain - $246,982
FO Level 1 - $135,205
FO Level 2 - $155,039
FO Level 3 - $161,650

Jetstar

Captain - $219,242 ($27,740 less than Tiger)
FO Level 1 - $120,583 ($14,622 less than Tiger)
FO Level 2 - $131,545 ($23,494 less than Tiger)
FO Level 3 - $142,507 ($19,143 less than Tiger)

In summary, Jetstar make you work harder, give you a crappier roster, no promotional opportunities into the Qantas group, less days off and less money.

Future prospects...

Perhaps the most important thing to consider is, "where will I be in 5-10-15-20 years from now, time to the left seat, job stability & security etc?" We don't have a crystal ball to help us decide....think carefully before taking the plunge....

Many would see that as the same thing, especially if you are considering leaving.

Has there ever been a legal precedent set for enforcing bonds though?

As far as I know, bonds cannot legally be enforced. Willing to be proven wrong with facts though.

ATC have a fairly hefty sized one. There may be examples of them absconding overseas and being chased. The military have them too.

Good question!

Bonds are not enforceable unless they form part of you EA. Bonds that are a part of an EA (as in the Tiger agreement) are enforceable. In the past, bonds that pilots were compelled to sign up to that didn’t form part of the pilots EA or EBA were deemed to be unenforceable.

The precedent was set by the AFAP in McLennan v Surveillance Australia.

Both the Tiger and Jetstar EA's contain bonding clauses, Jetstar however cannot bond new recruits, only internal type changes.

Tiger wins that round.

I thought they were going to vary them in order to make it work?

Thank you for the detailed reply's.

Is anyone on here actually employed by Tiger? If so can you share how the lifestyle pans out on a 5/3? What are typical sign on times? How long are duty days etc?

Cheers
