What is the current situation in Australia re 482 work visas for overseas pilots?

Question.
Colleague has Australian CPL/ ATPL subjects/ 737 type rating with 500 hours on type and current IPC; but not Australian citizenship. With reports continuing of shortage of suitably experienced pilots (interpret that as you wish) in Australia, what is the situation with 482 work visas?
Can it be applied for by an applicant from overseas on the chance of finding work? Or must it first be sponsored by an Australian operator? Currently are there pilots flying here on 482 Visas?

"This temporary visa lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they can’t find a suitably skilled Australian to fill."
"Can it be applied for by an applicant from overseas ..."
No, read the Visa conditions, not a hope. The applicant employer must support the application with labour market testing and employment offer documentation.

No Australian temporary or permanent residency and work Visa (except perhaps the temporary backpacker work visa) allows an applicant come to Australia "for a look around" in the hope of gaining employment.

Took a quick trip through the link tail wheel posted but didn't see an accounting of how many of these 482s have been issued to pilots (or anyone else). Does anyone know how many are flying in Australia under this visa ? That info must be posted somewhere ?

Wait a few more months.

There is a good chance Indonesian Cruise lines soon
will be offering tickets to Australia, all expenses paid after arrival.

Thanks, Tail Wheel. I'll pass that along to the inquirer. J
