Actually, AOPA exists for the benefit of members, that some of AOPA activities rub off on the rest of the aviation community is all to the good.
Legally, AOPA is a public company limited by guarantee, the members are the shareholders, and the corporations law is abundantly clear about the directors duties to the members.

Actually, ......
....I am well aware of AOPA's duties and obligations thanks LS but nonetheless it is an interesting point worth contemplation.

That good, because in recent years, in my opinion, it has not necessarily been so. Indeed, in some individual cases, the lack of knowledge of the Corporations Act 2001 has been, in my opinion, embarrassing. In my opinion, one might even say aggressive and reckless ignorance.
The current CEO is, in my opinion, doing a good job, I can only hope the current directors give him full backing.
