Expat Opportunities in Aus/NZ

Good day all,

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but here goes.

What is the stance of Australian and NZ operators on employing expats, particularly South African. Before you get out the pitchforks, I know pilots are protective of their turf and nobody wants to see foreigners taking local jobs, but...rumours abound of a pilot shortage over there so are companies open to expats?

This is with the eye on permanent immigration to your beautiful part of the world, not a temporary gig. Let us presume Aus/NZ licence and visa requirements complied with.

I am currently Capt on B737 but should we make the decision I would look at anything, Capt or FO. The wife should be able to get a transfer through her company so second income, therefore salary is not make or break.
TT: 10000hrs
B737: 7000hrs, 600hrs Command, Type-rated instructor/Training Capt

Your thoughts and advice will be greatly appreciated. Just considering future options and getting a feel for the climate. Things are getting a bit hairy over here in SA.

Much appreciated.

Welcome!

Yes you may get a few pitchforks on this page...

Assuming you’re organising your own Visa (no sponsorship from a company) I’d say most operators would look at you with those hours and experience.

Rex - probably get DEC on the Saab given how short they’re rumoured to be

Q’link - F/o but possibly DEC on the cards for them as well

As for all the other jet operators unfortunately you can expect to go back to the bottom of the pile. Very few DEC jobs on jets in Aus. Occasionally seen Tiger (I think) and Cobham (717) advertise for DEC but that’s about it.

Big presumption, especially on the Visa. You've either got it or you don't.

I can't speak for the Aussies, but there's no Visa/Immigration sponsorship for Pilots in NZ. If you have the License and the right to work here, then there's no barriers for foreign Pilots.

JetConnect might have DEC's on offer, although they're in transition at the moment moving onto VH rego's. Otherwise there's no DEC Jet Jobs in NZ. J* regional might have DEC on the Q300 but likely to need time on type and an Aussie ATPL.

Jetstar, Virgin Blue and now JetConnect all operate on Australian registered Aircraft thus will need the Australian license.

We've got plenty of foreign pilots here at Air NZ, but you'd need to be comfortable starting at the bottom, meaning SO 787/777 or perhaps a direct A320 FO.

In my Career, outside of PPrune, I've never witnessed any angst towards foreign Pilots because they were all legally entitled to work here. Mention Visa sponsorship for foreign Pilots however and you're likely to be lynched.

-edit-

There's no real shortage of Pilots down this way, merely a shortage of Pilots with the experience levels Airlines have been accustomed to hiring.

Don't tell the Oz immigration people that you are a pilot; tell them that you are a farmer!

Peter Dutton wants Australia to help white South African farmers who he says are facing violence, land seizures - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Indeed. At least Aus has put pilots on the scarce skills list for certain skilled visa types, mainly the temporary (4 years) and company/state sponsored visas though.

As long as they don't ask me to demonstrate any relevant skills - I haven't got the tan and I'm a little rusty milking them cows Those words by Mr. Dutton set the cat amongst the pigeons over here though.

Thanks to all for the input and options!

Please ignore anything Dutton says. He's a clown as are most of the politicians in this country sadly....

What is the wife's qualification? Often that can be a better pathway into Australia with full work rights for you.

She has industry experience in medical research but still busy with her degree. Maybe an option to explore once she has the degree in hand. Thanks!
