Well, there sure don't seem to be many old, bold, ex-baseball player pilots.

From the NTSB report:

"...Two inflated life vests and numerous fragments were recovered within a 300-ft radius from the wreckage..."

Two water activated vests ??? If so, not the safest thing in an aircraft. Perhaps inflated in flight ?

If those type of jackets were carried in the aircraft for use during an emergency...understandable why they would be afloat with the wreckage.
The accident got there first.

Not one of them are bold pilots sorry.
All of them are pilots that knew the limits of design limitations of the aircraft they flew and as such were able to test, fly, and carry out manovers that normal poeple cant understand.

Very well written response, but having read their biographies I can not agree they were not bold, great pilots but very bold and also very lucky.

In civilian live they were not lucky as in flying. Yes they had some luck in the military in flight combat. There testing work was calculated and never exceeded.
Whislt flying has its risks, ricks can always be lowered. Ie flights over tiger country when a 10min diversion over easier country that may be just what is required

I knew an old pilot, who hadn't been a pilot for very long, but he was every bit of bold.... the boldest pilot I've ever known... he's dead now after smacking into a hill and crispy frying himself.

It's true what they say about old and bold.

What has baldness got to do with being a pilot? I could never understand that stupid term.

Yes, though the report says the vests were inflated. Miss-print perhaps ?

Don't know about Winkle Brown, but both Hoover and Yeager had their moments. Yeager had to bail out of a NF-104, nearly losing his life in the process, because his instrument flying skills were not up to par for the test being performed, an attempt on an altitude record. Had taken over from the project pilot in order to claim another record.

Bob Hoover crashed his Aero Commander after a double engine failure caused by refuelling with Jet A. Also scraped the belly of the Aero Commander on the runway during one of his shows, requiring re skinning. All of us are subject to the same human foibles.

That's all well, but Bob wasn't on 3 types of drugs was he, including amphetamines?

Beautiful machine

I have flown the ICON and can say it is a beautiful machine. So much fun and probably the easiest to learn/land/handle GA airplane I have flown.

Love it.
