Airservices Australia Accelerate Program

Pilots, air traffic controllers raise safety concerns over plan to axe 900 jobs - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

So this was obviously a co-ordinated press release from the unions representing the non-operational workers who face redundancy at Australia.s favourite ANSP.

But interesting to note that the ATC and Pilots Union (both representing very operational interests) have also weighed in heavily.

Having seen the assurances in Senate Estimates and via the professional spinners before, being a little less frank than the full picture, one can only wonder what the real operational impact may be.

My contacts within ATC suggest that operational numbers have changed little since 2008, with every new controller simply replacing one that has retired - bearing in mind that back in 2008, they were incredibly short of controllers and this was revealed in public by the management.

Also, there are some very big projects coming on that must require a ramp up of operational numbers - OneSky, Brisbane Airport Parallel runway come to mind immediately, Badgerys Creek and Melbourne Airport down the track.

Wasn't it an AOPA exec who said all the towers should be sold off to McDonald's?
