Canberra Apt - visiting Pvt aircraft

Just wondering if someone can offer a practical Pov for visiting Pvt Ga aircraft to Cbr airport. Ersa talks of requiring facilitation by one of the Fbo's or ground handlers & then goes on to list airline & corporate type handlers.

Is this really necessary or can a first time visitor (with Asic) manage to negotiate entry & exit, refuelling & parking in the GA parking area?

Are landing/ parking fees similar to other capital city airports or are they extorting all visitors? Any info appreciated, Cheers.

Just fly in.

Decide whether you want to park on the tarmac or the grass. Both are at the western end of the aerodrome. Either way, there's only one AVGAS fuel point (western end of the GA tarmac area).

Parking charges apply - more if you want to park on the tarmac. Whether the charges result in the "extorting" of people is a question that only a court can decide and on which I won't comment.

Exit is via a push button gate at the facility at Gate 3. You can't miss Gate 3: It is a toilet block and donga with coiled razor wire along the eaves to welcome visitors.

Getting back in requires forward planning. You need to program the working hours number and after hours number to call to get airside, and call the appropriate number in advance of your preferred access time. My experience is that the security and operations people will always do their best to fit around GA requests. Just give them as much notice of your entry timing preferences as practicable.

Karunch,

Perhaps keep in mind that the RWY, advised by ATIS, can sometimes be changed at rather short notice by YSCB ATC..

Thanks both of you. Sounds much like the typical Oz capital city airport despite the Ersa carry-on.

The security guys are normally quite helpful. I have on one occasion had them drop me up to the hire car place (and in Hobart too, even let us drive on the apron).

It has been called the GA detention centre by some…..and I see why

I learnt to fly at Canberra.

It's depressing to see how user-unfriendly the place has become.

I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes for them to let me through. Have your ASIC ready as they will check it.

There are also a couple of runway incursion hotspots, check your ERSA.

If you want to catch up for a beer or 50, PM me!

Clint,

"Exit is via a push button gate at the facility at Gate 3. You can't miss Gate 3: It is a toilet block and donga with coiled razor wire along the eaves to welcome visitors."

Flew a Yank businessman into Cant'berra.
Walked him over to the "Terminal"
As we approached he asked what it was, I told him the GA terminal.
"Looks more like Stalag 13" he replied.

Jaba when it was owned by the gummint it was a happy, busy, easy place to fly into and from. It took private industry monopoly greed to turn it into what it is now ...
