hi all,

am thinking of moving to Australia for personal reasons. do i stand a chance of getting any aviation job with the following qualification:

Faa atp, 4000+ hrs TT, 850 hrs jet time, currently flying single engine turboprop, age 34

The short answer is, yes - if you have the right to live and work in Australia, particularly if you're happy to start with a turboprop - there has probably not been a better time in the last 7-8 years. I'm not sure about licence conversion from FAA, but it can't be too difficult for an ATP? (hmm, that actually wasn't such a short answer) Good luck.

Possibly pass all Australian ATPL subjects, Class 1 medical, MCC course, Flight Test, and English Test.

Only guessing but I'm sure CASA might even give you a few more hurdles.

few regional carriers are struggling to find qualified crews. I am sure you will find something easy enough, if not a Jet, surely a turboprop for start.

Considering the country you posted from, do you have citizenship or right of residence in Australia, as "pilot" (ANZSCO 231111; 231114 or Instructor 231113) ) is not currently a skill in demand which would support or benefit an Australian Visa application.

Getting visa to Australia can be hard. To give you a idea I meet my wife in Vietnam visited her in Ukraine, then applied for her and her 2 kids to visit me and my 3 kids here in Australia. 2 visitor visa applications were refused and I was told by 2 senators offices and Senior Secretory at Australian Embassy in Russia that to get a Visitor Visa we had to leave a child behind.

I read about certain operator hiring direct entry PICs for Dash 8, using 457 visa which is,long stay job sponsored visa. Other than that, not much. While possible, it may not be wise relying on finding aviation employer for migrating over.

BTW CSOL is for regional or state migration 'stream', not general/independent. If you have partner/spouse, it may be feasible to be secondary applicant, under the other person's visa.

ATPL conversion does not require sitting all exams. It' mainly air law, IREX/ifr, human factors. The so-called MECIR, twin ifr here, is doable mostly in sim, even testing, if advanced enough sim. It's all in the regs.

If one needs 'skills assessment' for certain visa subclass, then instructor is 2yr+ and 'pilot' 5yrs, which is administered by CASA, unlike the FI stuff.

Again, do own research and do not trust all well meant but possibly incorrect info. Without other skills/experience, it won't be simple. Unless marrying Aussie and then still costly fees.

Never been so cheap to spend USD in Oz. Works against me saving AUD now to burn in US. Eventually again.

thank you all very much for taking your time to reply.

my long time girl friend, soon to be wife, has Aussie nationality. so i guess getting the legal right to work won't be that hard.

As to the license conversion, i checked the info from CASA website and also some threads here on PPRuNe. it seems doable tho it might take quite some time.

my only worry is the jobs situation in Australia. i earn a very decent wage where i am right now. i believe it would be so foolish to throw this away for the sake of just living together.

If you want to pay for your own type rating for useless type in Aus apply at JetGo. I'd do some VERY serious research before you did, and consider if you want to retard your career!

Partner visa applications are currently about $7,000 and about a year to process, if you use a agent it is about another $5,000.

Sub Class 457 Visas are limited to regional and rural Australia. Not many airlines based in regional or rural Australia......

I was generalising in my previous post. Yes, you are correct, "Pilot" is on the CSOL list...........

You must nominate an occupation from the Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List (CSOL) if you are nominated by a State or Territory Government, a direct entry stream Employer Nomination Scheme visa, a Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) or a Training and Research Visa (Subclass 402).

Good luck in convincing a State or Territory Government to nominate a Pilot applicant, unless operators in that State or Territory are demanding Government support.

Theoretically possible, but in practice.......... Well, that could be another thing!
