I believe the ASIS at MTG in 2001 was a PAPI, happy to be corrected though.
As said earlier it was an AT-VASIS in operation in 2001. I personally witnessed on numerous occasions, three lights fly up and three lights fly down at the same time, particularly during ground fog/drizzle conditions.

I can't remember exactly when the PAPI went in but it wasn't until sometime later, possibly 2003/2004?
