If you scan the picture (from dot to dot in a circular motion), it doesn't have the same effect as if you fixate. I think you have just proved that scanning does work when used correctly!

Study up on "inattentional blindness" and it will frighten you. This is one of the reasons why otherwise-good eyewitnesses evidence is often at variance - and often a partly-hidden reason behind many unexplainable crashes.

Interesting that you don't actually need to stare at the flashing dot, the other dots will also disappear at random if you can fixate on any place within the rotating blue +'s
