I seem to recall the Blackhawks, Kiowa's and Chinooks doing a really good combined roles display at one of the previous Avalon shows; that was definitely worth watching. I also seem to remember some kind of Apache chopper (or similar) doing loops too a few years back, that was good value.

i would like to see it all, with the explosions, but using live weapons, not fake petroleum bombs, there is nothing like the sound of a 50cal letting rip from the side of a blackhawk, or the cannon fire from an F18 on a straffing run. more a short sharp BRRRRP noise, rather than the 1 shot every second as fake pyros went off.

Avalon High Flyers!
Well made my way from Sydney arrived late by road after F inlaw delayed into Tulla. Friday at High Flyers at $620 a POP!!! No special parking,lucky F inlaw had disabled sticker .Facilities great but only 1/2 full but well staffed .Funny having paid that much and still just overlooking the people on the other side of the rail with a lot more change in their pockets it was hard to see the value at all. 1st year for this club and dont know how they went sat sun but wont be doing that again.
Wollongong Air Show (Illawara) flew a chieftan in, park at the best spot , no charges and NO CASA and no entry fee. Better closer displays and Air displays just as good if not better ......thats where I'll be Wings level ...

Had a great time with my son on the Sunday of the airshow, paid nothing watched the Raptor over the top of the extended runway to the south. Will be there again next year.

Given I was unable to make it, and my only real chance to see an airshow every several years is to wait for Amberley, which was moved to Perth this year.....I'd volunteer to clean up, but a point like that is lost on those who think nothing of being able to attend an airshow with an ability drop 10's of thousands at a whim....

They are so anal you would never get clearance at Avalon for anything like the above, even the explosions would be a bit OTT for most with the fire danger.
Agree though, live fire, live bombs are awesome.

Actually I have seen it done with live weapons, but that was a long time ago when we had a real air force - the australian navy sky hawks.
Six of them came over the hill from behind us at fifty feet - complete and total surprise.
Each had a different weapon load which they then demonstrated.
The finish was the Sqn ldr with a single 2000lb bomb which rattled a few windows back at Pucka. Talk about showmanship!
The air force turned up with Two out of the promised four Mirages, dropped two bombs that didn't explode we heard the distant rattle of Two Defa cannons and a bit of dust, then they went home for tea.

MAKS airshow Moscow Russia , interesting aircraft and amazing flying displays.A must visit if you get the chance.
My question to a US airforce pilot while looking at a MIG 35 display "Who would win in a dogfight?" . His reply "Well there more maneuverable but I like to think our ordinance is better"
No one was dropping live weapons .But at Russian airshow plane drop on you ;-)

500n, the Pucka range is /was big enough to give the required safety distances, at least back then. From memory(which may be wrong) the clearance was 1000m from a 2000 pounder.
The general rule of thumb we were taught is that if you see the big orange flash you are too close without overhead protection.

Yp, probably Russia. I've been minding my own business on a mountain near a far eastern Russian town when the army decided to start shelling it. We weren't sure what from except it seemed to be getting louder, until the track we were on took us straight in front of a line of 13 tanks....
I enjoyed Avalon this year, went on Friday afternoon / evening & Saturday,
Raptor was the hi-lite, Couldnt believe the parents who were trying to comfort their screaming babies during the F22, F18 & F16 displays.
Would have liked to see more Heli action, the guy in the 300 was impressive.
Trade halls were okay & happy with the static displays, Food was also good.
Miss the Russians!
All in all I spent over $1000 geting there, accommodation, Skybus, trains & 2 days entry + food, but it was money well spent.
To the volunteers keep up the good work (use to be one)

For those interested in seeing the real BBBRRRRP and bang you need to get across to Switzerland for the annual weapons camp. You'll swear you could reach out and touch the aircraft on their firing passes. Need to be well fit though, it's a long hard climb. Google "axalp", video on youtube, and info on the Swiss Airforce web site.

Many moons ago, there was an airshow to "celebrate" DCA taking over Bankstown from the military.
The entertainment included 77 Squadron P-51D dropping live napalm, firing unguided rockets, and firing (presumably) blanks from the guns.
The AAA airfield defenses were very impressive for noise.
Lincolns dropped practice bombs as well.
The "highlight" of the day was the first "official" appearance of the Vampire, the PA explained that it was "so fast" that we should look ahead of the noise, or we would never see it.
As a young lad, I was most impressed by the whole show.
The circumstances of the ceremonial arrival of the State Governor to open the show (in a C-47) is another whole story in itself.
Aaaaaahhhh!!, the good old days!!!!
