New Video Released on Q32

Happy new year.

I released a new video on QF32. I guess it is Australia's most famous flight. It is an interview with Richard De Crespigny and I wanted to know if you like it.

60 minutes did a brief interview with some of the other crew. Is there any chance you could interview the FO, I'd love to hear more from him?

Eve us old codgers & the youngin's coming up thru the ranks of aviation applaud you for your efforts your obvious out there personality & above all your simple innocence of it all as you have not been tainted by officialdom & the corrupt nature of this at times thankless world we live in

I do hope you go far & one day when I am sitting back on my mythical rocking chair under some wide veranda I shall look back at your early achievements & have a smile on my face as you tell it with such purity:-) Youth, don't lose it Eve you have a gift:-)

Really enjoyed the video and signed the petition too!

With all the experience on board, would like to have known why nobody thought to pull the CVR circuit breaker! Is it not required, or prohibited by SOP's, or just not possible on Airbuses?

I was very surprised when I read QF32 and found out that the CVR (Cockpit voice recorder) was not working when the investigators went to listen to it.

I think the reason that nobody thought to "pull the CVR circuit breaker" while it was flying, is because they did not know it was not working. It was actually working intermittently and therefore recorded 2 hours over a 4 hour period. Unfortunately it was not very useful.

Can you tell me more about when pilots need to "pull the CVR circuit breaker" and does it do something like reboot the planes systems?

Hi Eve,

I know that in some aircraft the last item on the evacuation check list is to "pull CVR cicrcuit breaker", which will stop the recording and preserve what has been recorded. I am not sure if this applies to Airbuses, or Boeings.

When I watched your video, I just thought Richard glossed over that question somewhat and I would like to have heard more, perhaps I need to read the book.

Circuit breaker in planes are basically switches. They allow to "open" the electric circuit they are part of. When an electric circuit is open, there is no electricity going through it, so it effectively stops all devices which are part of it.

Pulling the CVR circuit breaker would prevent the CVR from receiving electric power, therefore preventing it to record more voices, which it does by overwriting the older content. The effect being that the 2 hours old (in the case of the A380) conversations would be preserved instead of recording the sound of an empty flightdeck for the time it took for the malfunctioning engine to stop, way later after the evacuation of the aircraft.

So about the when, Howard Hughes mentioned that some aircraft evacuation check-list ask the pilot to pull the CVR circuit breaker since there will be nothing more to record from there on, and what has been recorded before is definitely of the highest value.

Note 1: It is called pulling the circuit breaker, because the circuit breaker look like this on (old) planes (the black heads). It is "on" when pushed in (default state), and off when pulled out (the one with the visible white part in front of the yellow arrow). So you would need to "pull" out the "head" of the circuit breaker to moving it to the off position.

As far as I know, circuit breaker would no longer look like that on a modern aircraft like the A380. They would be operated by the computer via graphic controls on the flightdeck displays.

Note 2: The main purpose of a circuit breaker is actually not manually switching off devices, but automatic off-switching the circuit if the equipment is electrically malfunctioning (like a short circuit) to prevent other circuits sharing the same source of power to be brought down.
House main power boards are very similar (though the switch are rotating ones), so I guess you could ask your parents to quickly show/explain you your home's one, that would probably make it a lot clearer.


PS: First post on pprune, not even a pilot yet, I hope I didn't do anything wrong. My feeling was that Eve might not be totally aware of what a circuit breaker is. Amazing job on the videos, by the way.
