Dash7 or Dash8 landing lights

Hi all in Aotearoa, what's with the alternating flashing landIng lights on those aircrafts landing at NZAA? Is it a standard fitting? I might be wrong here; I have not seen these on other aircraft elsewhere.

The Qantas 'classic' 737's have them as well. They are supposed to help prevent bird strikes.

It looks like they are on the QF -800's as well.

Wig wag lighting is supposed to improve visibility, not sure to hoomans or birds or both.

I'm fitting them myself just for that reason.

I think all the Air Nelson DHC8's have them.
They certainly make them easier to spot at a distance. Rather attention-getting.
