Changes to ATPL
ATPL theory credits have been valid from the day you finished the final exam. Another words, it could take you 10 years to get the hours, but it wouldn't matter when you did the exams.
There is talk of making it a 3 year validity, however to the best of my knowledge, nothing official about it at all.
To be honest, I think it makes sense. While a lot will argue that most of the content holds no relevance to modern day operations, I disagree. There is a lot of content in it that through application to your work environment, makes you a better pilot with a greater understanding of what's going on.
If you did your ATPL's 10 years ago before you really had the opportunity to exercise the knowledge you learnt, how much do you honestly think you're going to remember?

Air Transport Pilot Licence Exams
A candidate passing a subject exam is awarded a 'temporary' pass for that subject. When all seven subject exams have been passed within a required period (read following paragraph), the candidate is awarded a full ATPL exam credit (either for aeroplane or helicopter).
As one of the measures of the Australian ATPL standards, the candidate must pass all seven subject exams within a 3 calendar year period, counting from the date of the first attempt, successful or otherwise. CASA does not grant extension as this would adversely affect the standards of the Australian ATPL.
Notes: A pass in a subject exam may only be held as a temporary pass until the candidate successfully completes the set of seven subject exams in the three calendar year period described above.
If all the seven subject exams are not passed within the defined period, the temporary pass(es) for subject exam(s) will be expired at the end of the three-year period.
Therefore candidates are strongly advised not to attempt any subject exam until they have undertaken comprehensive and satisfactory aeronautical knowledge training, required by the respective aeronautical knowledge syllabus.
