Just spent quite a bit of time in the States (and at airports) it is clear that the primary focus is facilities & infrastructure that enables business getting done. While there is retail, it is not the prime focus and you certainly don't get the arse raping you get at Australian airports.
Free Wi-Fi, yes! Free. You wouldn't do your banking in it but it enables getting all info you need in a new city. Reasonably priced parking not the shonky bull****!t that goes on at Aus airports. And retail that is, wait for it, functional & priced no differently to the shop down the street. God help the U.S. if they allow any Australian companies into airports.

700 ml bottle of Tanquerary No 10 Gin 40 proof (mmmm, smooth) at Dan Murphy: AU$74.
1 litre bottle at 47 proof at Sydney airport duty free: AU$54. A good deal you might say. But...
1 litre 47 proof at LAX DFS duty free: US$31- or around AU$29. Someone, somewhere is making a bit of money out of this game.
Then again Walgrens in Tucson had a special on Amsterdam gin( not bad but not Nr 10 standard) at US$4.99 a bottle
