Android applications for pilots in Australia
Hi All,
I am trying to work out whether there is a good "Moving Map" for Android. For use as pilot in Australia.

GPS Essentials - Android app on AppBrain
^^ the above app is pretty good, whilst not a moving map as such, it does give readouts of GS, Track, Alt, etc. If u are in range of 3G, you can use GoogleMaps and have a cursor overlaid.

Hema have the best I've seen, they have topo, marine and street maps for your android. AU and NZ. If I had an iPad or other tablet I'd seriously look at that.
If you want free, try Maverick on the android market, but it has some drawbacks that would be a PIA for aviation. Check it out.

For free 1:250,000 maps, Oz-wide, stored on phone (approx 1gb), use Memory-Map. The app works well (get the APK file off their website; not yet on Android Play). Install instructions here.
You then need to install the Memory Map Windows program and download the maps; File>Digital Map Shop. You may need some of the base-maps first to tell MM what areas you want to download. Then download the 1:250,000 maps. You don't have to do all of Australia at once (takes a few hours and approx 1gb).
Example (which can be zoomed-in again):
The state HEMA maps are better as they have better labelling when zoomed out. You have to pay for them though.
I like the MM app; better than Maverick and all the others I've tried. It seems basic but does everything I want.
Oh yes, you'll probably need an external GPS antenna...Dual XGPS150A works well.
BTW, Memory-Map and the free 1:250,000 maps are available for idevices as well.
