CASA - Safety Seminar at Wagga
Went to the CASA seminar at Wagga last night - but I just cannot understand why CASA does not "come out" and be honest about what they expect of an operator.
In the discussions that arose there was no discussion raised by CASA on CAR 217 check and training, safety management systems, DAMP, Fatigue management, AOC compliance or any of the matters that arise around an active AOC.
The example used in the CASA presentation (an active country AOC operator using a Chieftain and a Metro), depicts just the people that the industry does not want and is doing it's best to weed out.
It would appear by the presentation that CASA still expects these people to be "out there", but is not saying how it is working to deal with these types of matters.
The seminar did cover the following:
Air Safety and Basic Human Performance
And from the CASA web-site, which says: "Aviation safety is critical and at the centre of this complex aviation system is the human. Humans play a critical role in aviation and must perform to high standards consistently. However, to be human is to err and on occasions humans violate standard operating procedures reducing safety margins. Find out more about error and violation and the way humans perceive the environment around them, perceive it, attend to it, compare it and then recognise it. This is how we think and process information. Want to be fooled by illusions?"
Well Mr. CASA - Don't just blame the poor old pilot, but put this in the co-operative space it should be - Operator, pilot, Owner, regulator.
Be honest about your role, and don't expect the pilot community to go along with the "show cause" notices, when you can't even do this type of presentation as more than a one-sided directed "show".

Write to J McCormick via the feedback on the casa website. Sounds like a gd opportunity to educate people that want to do things correctly is being missed.

Because deceit and deception allow the so called safety practicioners to hide behind the Organisation.
It is organisational mahem and whilst the CASA so called practicioners accept the fortnightly pay cheques nothing will change, all the rest is window dressing and has nothing to do with aviation or any notion of safety management or risk based assesment.

Self Regulation
Make that 90% when you count the customer requirements and the insurance companies. Mind you - these things are not bad but illistrate the reduced ACTUAL role CASA plays in the 'regulation' of the industry.
Sounds like another perfect opportunity, for the regulator, to engage with the small end of town goes begging!

I note Wagga Aero Club advocating and encouraging re-opening of the tower. That's what we need, more class D and more restrictions. Something from the CASA seminar rubbed off. Or perhaps the RAAF are all coming back?

Check the local TV channel is for the tape of that news item. I heard it and it distinctly said Wagga Aero Club want the tower re-opened. If that is not the fact as myself and two others saw and heard it, please put a retraction to the same TV channel or a public notice to that effect in the local newspaper. Get the bill sent to the TV channel if you speak for the organisation.
