Question Cessna 210 Centurion

With so many people eager to tell me in converations how much twin time, turbine time, jet time, IFR time etc, I got to thinking, what about the smaller stuff? Say the Cessna 210 for example. Its a pretty common type that most people have flown on the way up the ranks. I wonder who would have the most 210 hours in Australia? I see a lot of those funny looking 210s with the long pointy tails doing survey. Those guys must have a lot of time on type. I did hear of a bloke with so many hours on type at Fugro he was known as "210 Terry."
Just a rough survey, how many hours do you have on the legendary Centurion?

Last flew a 210 to help out a mate in 99-that gave me about 1000 hrs in 210's with another 1200 on 206's-but when I was in the NT in the early 90's there were Air North drivers with over 3000 on 210's during the 'recession we had to have!' Great aircraft-IMO the C200 series are the best large singles from a money making and flexibility point of view.

I believe that the two highest-time C210s' are in Australia. Wouldn't surprise me if that didn't apply to pilots as well.

I reckon they would have to be in the current Chartair fleet. A couple of machines had upwards of 16-17000 hours when I flew them 10 or so years ago, hate to think what the hours would be now days.

I have about 2300 or so on type. Only about 150 or so of those are above 200feet AGL tho. I think I might look towards flying something else once it tops 3000.

Flown a few with 20,000 hours+ on the airframe. There are no doubt some very high time machines in Africa too. I believe they are a popular type there also.

I recently asked about "210 Terry" , from formerly Geikie Air Charter at Fitzroy Crossing. Word is he's still flying 210s

800 hours. Nice machine, particularly the later ones with the higher flap speeds.

Last time I saw 210 Terry he had been doing a fair bit of o'seas work flying geo survey in Mongolia. Not sure if it was in one of his beloved Centurions though. Never met a guy more passionate about his flying.

Back to the question though. I was lucky back in 1999 with a bare arsed CPL I scored some charter work as well as aerial spotting and even dropping a few meat bombs out of one on city displays. All up though total time on the 210 is rather meagre at just on 60hrs.

I was hanging out with 210 Terry last week. He's been flying a PAC750 around on geo survey work.

I work with 210 Terry. Im pretty sure he has W100 on his weetbix each morning. He was flying the P-750 here but he was pining for the 210 so much that when a slot opened up on one again he jumped back into the faithful old centurion again.

Ha ha,

I met 210 Terry once in Kunnas and had a bit of a chat. He was telling me about flying in Mongolia.

It was then that I learnt one useful nugget of aviation truth: Apparently there's more vodka and more ladies than any normal pilot can handle.

About 1200 Hours across the 200 Series Cessnas, split about 400 C210 and 800 C206. They're a tough old bus.

I think I can trump this one. About 3,800 seventies and eighties. Waiting for the next to raise.

While I enjoyed the 210, this is a game I'm happy not to win

Some of the guys from Brolga Air in 1988/9, when they had TET and WMP on the Darwin-Jabiru-Gove-Groote Eylandt-Jabiru-Darwin five days a week would have clocked up a few hours.

Another C210 was purchased brand new by the owner in 1978, and stll does over 300 hours a year.

A C210 landed at Essendon one morning after reporting through APP he had a rough running engine.

This chap was a regular weekly visitor who was a very competent pilot,
and savvy with the system.

He continued on to a "normal" landing at Essendon after passing very serviceable fields at Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh.

Taxying past to maintenance, it was hard not to notice the oil streaked fuselage on the right side.

We later learned one of the pots had suffered a twenty cent size hole allowing most of the oil to escape.

Gutsy, lucky, who knows, but it was a happy ending.

Any other time the piston would try to squeeze through the aperture, or the engine would cease.

More an "engine" story than a "210" story, but it sort of hangs with the thread.

Terry only left the 210 so he could watch his season 3 of Californication on the 13' display in the dash of the XL. It did not work so hes back flying 210

2000hrs plus on type. Loved every second of it.

I know of someone with 5,000 plus hours on a 207 Plus had a pax once with 4,500hrs plus on a C210 - had a horrible feeling that he was overlooking me the entire flight

I don’t have that many hours on C210 but.

I hear the guy that endorsed ‘210 Terry’ on the C210 made him fly from YPJT- YPKG and overnight in KG.

Apparently the instructor demanded one beer from the pub in the main street of Kalgoorlie.

It was not until ‘210 Terry’ arrived in KG that he was told by his instructor that he would have to buy just that one beer. But unfortunately for him that one beer would have to come from every pup in the main street of KG.

Late the next day was circuits at JT and a tech quiz.

What an endorsement. You would have to say that whoever endorsed that ‘210 Terry’ must be one grump old bugger eh?
