Leongatha

Okay, I've waited a day and nothing appears on here... I heard there was an accident at Leongatha yesterday. Am I dreaming?

I caught a second hand version of what was on the TV news. Showed a KR2 flipped over and partially damaged. Understand that it was recently imported from the USA and had a recent history of engine issues as early as last weekend when it undertook it's maiden flight or at least maiden test-run.

Based on that, if I am referring to the correct aircraft, I do seriously wonder why it would have had 2 souls on board. I understand that the aircraft may have already been flying in another country, but it begs the question of whether or not it should have been under a test flight program whilst the bugs are ironed out.

Plane crash lands at Leongatha - News Videos - Yahoo!7 News

The plane is of the runway, on the main apron, with tire marks in a loop on the ground next to the taxiway.

Maybe one of the brakes locked on landing?

Leongatha is a big country airport with lots of open land around it. Not much traffic, but substantial runways mainly used for Ag and training operations.

There were some nasty crosswinds at Leongatha on the day which could have contributed. I note that is a tailwheel model too. Some of the KR's are nosewheel.

I was there, we were holding short for it as it came in and it went off the runway, bogged into the grass and flipped over, all about 10 - 20 meters from our plane.

I thought there was something dodgy happening with the landing gear as it touched down but it could have just been a weird looking one.

Anyway, we got the guys out and called some emergency crew. The photo you may have seen on the news was when their chopper got down there, after we flipped it back over and dragged it back to the apron.

Never thought id see anything like it so close up. So glad the guys were able to walk away from it as well.

Also, VH-XXX, the winds were calm when it came in to land. Either it was just a bad landing or there was something up with one of the main wheels.
