Motion CL900

Does anyone have one yet? I'm looking at you FTDK. It seems to have come out more expensive than the rumours were suggesting. I see they are in the current Harris Technology catalogue, but not the website.

I've moved my LS800 to using a bluetooth GPS, which makes the cockpit a lot better without wires, but battery life has nearly halved. I prefer the iPad for reading charts, but you can't go past the LS800 enroute and in the terminal area. But it would be better with a modern processor and Windows 7.

That is to test with.........of course he needs to have a plane to fly, or one that does!

I am thinking the apple is the go, as my LS800 has a terminal problem. If only Champagne FP would work on iPad I would be in for one.

Jepps is on iPad now plus all the other good apps, so only the Champers FP holds me back.

Jaba, don't know about the iPad (want one but don't want to pay for one) but my MacBook Pro can run Windows which will run Champ FP. I'm sure Forkie or Chuck will be able to enlighten you further.

Nope! Forkie is a Mac-free zone.

I use a Motion CFT-003 on my Yacht, absolutely brilliant, hot battery change and I get 4 hours out of a battery running Expedition with Intelsat C for Predict Wind on deck using 802.11G

At this time, the future is with iPad and OzRunways II, when it is released shortly. I'm already running the beta with live WAC, VTC, VNC, ERC & DAPS. Rest assured when you see it running you WILL be wanting it.

When they bring out the Android version, you may want to install it on the new ASUS tablet with the sexy detachable keyboard and massive battery life, a very impressive unit indeed.

The problem with the iPad is that they appear to be susceptible to "Cones of Silence", where the GPS stops working !!

An "on the ball" copilot with a G495 will save you from BIG embarassment !

Ozrunways documents are not accountable IFR documents. You acknowledge that they are not to be used as flight reference each time you start it up. You need Jepps for IFR use. And Ozrunways use the AsA charts - after a number of years on Jepps, I'm not going back. Also Ozrunways does not load the entire database on the iPad (unlike Jepp). You need internet access to download each new chart, after which that chart remains on the iPad. So, if you want a chart you didn't expect in flight you're in trouble. The Jepp subsription also does a nice job of document control, so you know you are on the right version. Ozrunways a nice thing (especially for the price) but its not an IFR solution.

IPad is really good, but the iPad Jepps don't yet have GPS support (it has been reported that it is coming). There are also some issues about the Ipad turning off when it gets too hot and other stuff. It is a very good thing to read in flight, but it needs a backup and its not the full solution (at least not yet).

The Motion tablet is the best thing so far. It has a daylight visible screen and warm swappable batteries and good GPS support. The Jepp enroute software is outstanding, especially with terminal chart overlays on the enroute maps. The big problem is that Motion fell asleep between the LS800 & CL900. Some of the recent tablets (eg the Viewsonic 10 inch one) with LED screens are not too bad, but don't have adequate battery life and (unlike Motion) don't have an option to extend battery life with swappable batteries etc. And I consider that a solid state disk drive is mandatory. The potential of the a normal disk drive failing at altitude might be small, but its a potential failure that can be easily crossed of the list with a SSD.

For the IFR pilot, I haven't found a better option than a Motion tablet plus ipad plus paper trip plates. I seem to be settling into using the Motion on the ground (for taxiways at unfamiliar airports) and enroute to the start of the approach, then changing to the ipad for the approach. Paper charts are on the kneepad, but frankly the iPad is more readable.

I use CFP rather than Champagne and it works nicely with the ipad using remote desktop to a version running on the server. I believe there are options to achieve the same thing with desktops in a non-server environment.

On OzRunways you just download all of the maps straight up, pretty easy, all stored in the memory. Hopefully it will be approved for use shortly.

Perhaps the tablet was busy doing other things?

I had that happen with a netbook running some (ground/ road) navigator software and the GPS just stalled and the map didn't advance.

Later (after getting lost and reverting to paper) I tracked it down to the fact that the anti-virus checker had decided to do it's thing (full disk scan) thus tieing up all the PC grunt!

Harris Technology have them in the current paper catalogue (for $1396 I think - not sure which version) but I don't see them on their website yet. I was told on the weekend that they aren't yet in stock, but due within days.

Old Arko, please check some of your facts.

Also Ozrunways does not load the entire database on the iPad (unlike Jepp).
Actually it does download & store everything on the device for offline use.

You need Jepps for IFR use
As far as I'm aware, these have only been approved for sole IFR use in America by Executive Jet. The FAA granted them use in all phases of flight after extensive testing including a rapid decompression test to 51,000ft. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't yet heard of an Australian carrier granted an approval by CASA for the Jepp app, so as it stands, both appear not yet for operational use.
