Swimming
Hi all
I'm about to start working full time up north and was wondering how many of you swim for exercise?
I've always enjoyed running, cycling and swimming and find swimming the most relaxing and good to clear the mind, however some pools do not have the best hygiene so you run the risk of an sinus or ear infection or even a rather upset stomach, non of which is good for a pilot.
So I'm wondering if anyone out there still does swim, and if so, what precautions do they take (if any), or would most deem it too risky and have just given up on swimming?

I don't swim, something to do with floundering, being unable to breathe when I want, and getting wet. However friends & colleagues in Darwin & Cairns haven't let your concerns stop them from regular swimming. None swim with a condom on & most are too old for the pill to be useful.

Swimming
Great exercise! No joint stress, good a good aerobic workout. Up until recently, I swam around 1km around 4 - 5 times per week. This was at various public pools.
Only precautions I ever took were good eye goggles and ear drops. Didn't swim in Darwin (nowhere near a public pool)

In reality, there is just as much random chance of picking up something from a floatie at your local suburban pool on child swim classes day than any other.
I clock up around 3k a week in suburban pools and haven't managed to pick up a lurgie yet.

Most public swimming pools are so dosed up with chlorine that it's a wonder it doesn't kill people!
Swim 1.5KM 5 days/week and it hasn't dome me any harm. The view can be pretty boring at times though!

Tropical ear infections are more due to not drying your ears after swimming than bacteria in the pool.
Using a twisted bit of kleenex as a wick usually does the trick.

There's an OTC medication available called Vosol. (I'm sure there are other similar things.) It's good for treating, or better yet, preventing swimmers ear, should you consider that a problem.
I'm a little prone to it having got an ear infection in the past, the drops - applied before swimming - appear to do the job well.

If it is Cairns, I use to swim 4-5 days a week at Marlin Coast Swimming Pool Smithfield which is on the northern beaches of Cairns. If you are on the south side there is an identical pool at Woree. If you are in the city Tobruk Memorial Pool at North Cairns is ok but avoid dawn and dusk due the sand flies which will eat you alive.
