CTC wings (NZ & Aus edition)

Thought I would start a new thread that is relevant to the NZ & Aus cadets who are applying/or currently are in the program. I myself have just applied, passed phase 1 (application process) and am waiting to hear for selection dates. I know there is a lot of information in the other CTC thread but that is mostly about the U.K side of things. Any information on the NZ interview would be really good, I sort of get the idea about the aptitude tests, and the job placement etc.

Cheers

I'm picking that this thread will get shifted to the "Wannabes" forum before too long.

Alex in my opinion there are plenty of other training providers in New Zealand (and probably Oz) that do as good if not better job than CTC for less money.

Don't get taken in by their sales pitch. There's more in what they don't tell you than what they will tell you. They have a very slick marketing programme.

Have you or you family had any previous involvement in the aviation industry particularly from a airline pilots perspective? If not you probably don't fully understand what they are telling you, or you are left with false impressions based on your lack of industry knowledge. Also you will not know what questions you need to be asking.

Much of what I say here doesn't just apply to CTC, there are other providers with very slick marketing that suck in unsuspecting prospective airline pilots.

Have a look around, go and have a chat at your local flying club, in fact go to as many places as you can, and, if possible get to know some industry people outside of the training enviroment.

I can assure you that all is not as portrayed by the likes of CTC.

Thanks for that 27/09,

My father is a pilot with Air NZ, he has encouraged me into going into CTC because of Eagle hiring straight out of CTC. I preferably would like to go to a different part of the country (down south) just to experience something different. But if I can land a job with Eagle 1 or 2 years out of CTC i'll take it.

Any more information to enlighten me wether Eagle have been hiring out of CTC? And any recommendations on a school down south? I've looked at NAC and have heard some very respectable things about them. Haven't really had an indepth research about them though.

Cheers

Eagle has taken 4 or 5 NZ cadets direct (or near-direct) from CTC. They have taken a LOT more instructors than cadets.

With RTG though, I'm not sure how progression will work any more. It would be a very prudent question to ask of CTC management during the interview.

No Problems Alex,

It would seem that you are better informed than most.

Toolow beat me too it to some extent. From what I hear Eagle have taken 3 or 4 cadets over the past three or so years, so an average of a bit over 1 a year. Not big numbers.

So far, the CTC cadet scheme dosen't offer good odds in my book.

Toolow mentions the Recruit to Group that is talked of around the traps, who knows how this might affect the low hour guys. Might be good, might be bad.

With RTG though, I'm not sure how progression will work any more. It would be a very prudent question to ask of CTC management during the interview.
I would be wary of any answer from a flying school recruiter.

One problem cadets have, is most carriers like Eagle, Air Nelson etc don't hire First Officers, they hire potential Captains. Very often cadets will not have the requirements for an ATPL when their turn comes for a command. If these airlines have too many cadets they run out of Captains. Therefore the recruitment of too many cadets is a potential problem for these airlines.

I've also heard good things about NAC, they would be definitely worth a look.

Don't dismiss the likes of Bay Flight in Tauranga, and the Waikato aero club, Hamilton, they are are both close to Auckland, (I'm guessing you're from the general Auckland area) further south there is the New Plymouth aero club, Hawkes Bay and East Coast aero club, Flight Training Manawatu, New Zealand Aviation Academy (Canterbury aero club) in Christchurch and Mainland in Dunedin. I've listed these geographically and not in any order of personal preference, they are all good operators from what I hear.

Is that the road show you're talking about?

Thought I might do along to see what they say. I've a couple of questions that I wouln't mind answers to, though I suspect they might not want to answer them in front of the prospective victims.
