Girl With Stick Seeks Private Tutor - Aerodynamics

Having passed the other six exams, I repeatedly (THREE times!) keep failing CPL Aerodynamics.

I am seeking a tutor in the Sydney area to help me understand, in depth, the concepts necessary to pass the exam.

I feel I am ready for my flight test, but need technical help in getting over this exam hurdle.

Feel free to PM!

Lift = IAS x AoA

Not as a direct formula but as a relationship. Understand that and the exam is 98% complete.

Which books are you using? Have you tried BT?

BT worked pretty well for me

Have a look at some of the Instructor Rating material as well, as Aero is a big portion theoretically speaking.
Everyone has their achilles subject, and I can guarantee you its just time spent in the books, and it will eventually click.

Good Luck

Could you organise time with your (a) instructor or flying school to run a session to go through aerodynamics?

Alternatively, try and work out what areas you're weak in. If it's first principal stuff, focus on that and the remainder might fall into place.

Your eldest one should be right in the prime of maths and physics studies.....what is the point of having kids if they are not put to use at some point! (Just don't ask my daughter)

Good Luck!

Amazon.com: Mechanics of Flight (10th Edition) (9780582237407): A.C. Kermode: Books

This will sort you out.

Handling the big jets is also great, but more in tune with ATPL study.

Bob Tait will get you over the line, but certainly won't give you a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

Just ask Roxy "A heavy aeroplane will glide the same distance as a light aeroplane - no matter what"

Good luck with it. If you were further south I'd offer my services, but I'd probably confuse the hell out of you (and myself in the process).

I used Bob Tait and only just passed Aerodynamics, 75% I passed all my cpl exams 1st time round using BT. If I didn't understand something I just emailed him and he would graciously return my email with an explanation, he's very helpful. Aero is a hard one to understand espeacilly when you are trying to understand it from a text book and from home study. There are many dvds out there that may be of use particularly Oxford aviation products are really good, Sportys is also really good. I bought a Jeppesen dvd on aerodynamics and that was quite helpful but not quite in depth enough.

Dumb question...does one receive a knowledge deficiency report for CPL exams?

Devil

Maybe you should reconsider your pprune pseudo-name and then try to concentrate a bit......

GWAS (btw, your moniker always make me think of a chopper pilot),

One good publication alluded to already (instructing material) can be found here for free plus $15 shipping.

If that fails try here then click on Publications and look at ordering the Aeroplane Flight Instructor Manual. (It looks like they have currently run out but surely your flying school has one floating around the joint.)

While you are at it get as many other free items as you like all for the same $15 shipping (I even got the chopper instructing book just for my own sick interest in all things aviation).

Thanks heaps for your suggestions guys (and gals)

I have been using the BT, and even went up to his course in Redcliffe. I'm only failing by 2 marks, but that, to me, shows a hole in my knowledge.

Normally, when I fail, I go through the KDRS and highlight the areas on the VFR syllabus where I'm lacking. I'm afraid that I might be rote learning the answers due to trying so many practice papers, rather than fully understanding the concepts!

However, I've now found a tutor, through the Power of Pprune!

GG I have the Kermode book - I think the fact that I have an arty background, with a total deficiency in even basic physics is my problem. I can't get past page 10.

Pyro You can return the favour, and test ME in the FB chatbox!!

Nirak not quite sure WHAT you're implying there with the pointy finger icon...is it having a stick, or being a girl, that prevents one from concentrating??

FRQ CB Thank you! And, to confess, I am a latent chopper pilot, saving up for lessons on a meagre writer's salary!
