Buff in Darwin

For Mirage3's info, a Darwin based colleague tells me the high security B52 is still around, and unfortunately, continues to draw a large crowd of onlookers. Even the local TV news featured the aircraft during the week. Yesterday, it arrived back in DN about 5pm, and after landing, dropped it's drag chute on the runway. This put the Police Air Wing, a Airnorth 170 and a J*320 into the holding pattern at Howard Springs for 20 mins while the drag chute was recovered.

Careful Dog One. B52's in Darwin is a touchy subject.... apparently!

This Australian orientated aviation thread was previously closed by the mods!

No reason offered?

Maybe the greenies complained about excessive consumption of fossil fuels in the top end.

Another expensive, but useless, "Deterrent" ? (don't mention the "N" word, - or Bali -, they're bad for tourism.) Not very effective against black pajama clad, or towel headed, AK47 wielding villagers, so far.
See what it is like against small boat coastal invaders. It obviously has Darwinians and Canberrans bluffed.

Big Brother is Watching You, - even if he is over a decade late to Our latest Confrontation. National Security is secure borders and entry points, and includes freedom from fear of being overrun by enemies, and having our way of life destroyed, - or overawed and bullied by friends, Mirage 3.

Anyway, Darwin should have its current Military airport further out of town, in case of a visiting aircraft "Accident". It could also be a secure base co-shared by another government Department as a Processing Centre for the ones that "slip through"....

But nobody actually goes there because there is nothing to do in the evenings - particularly for red-blooded american boys!

According to your profile, you were 60, 3 years ago, Arnold, so you work it out. Was being cryptic, as I have no inclination to get into an endless debate as practiced in Jet Blasts Hamster Wheel threads. Suffice to say there was one in the early 60's that eventually caused the F111s, and Howard had one over East Timor, with its aftermath. Now the current lot have mini ones when they seek co-operation to stop boats transiting. And during all this, where was our primary Ally, publicly? Very low key, even under the radar it would seem..

But nobody actually goes there because there is nothing to do in the evenings - particularly for red-blooded american boys!
Precisely.. Perhaps we need another base on the outskirts of town, within a short drive of the bright lights, to cater for the Air Forces that need their creature comforts handy..

There was a contract going years ago to provide transport for Tindal staff to get to and from Delamere and Darwin weekly - for a civilian operator -, WTF - they're the Air Force, can't they find pilots and Kingairs to fly themselves, and give some flying to their own..? Or is that sort of communication flying not good enough..?

They used to have a couple of Nomads, but I read that they nearly crashed one while playing with the flaps and so stopped flying them. I read that on this forum somewhere.

BTW 38 Sqn is little more than a King Air taxi service these days, they could do it.

If you're so desperate to take photos of a B52, there is one sitting in the hangar at the aviation museum 1km from the terminal.

Eat your heart out
