All open records are now unfortunatly held by the Su 27. Maybe the Yanks could be convinced to strip down an F 22 and have a go at the records. This may be an expensive exersise and not reasonably possible.

What about the SR-71?

Surely it had a reasonable RoC, and has the max altitude ever been released, or is it still classified?

If it has been released, does anyone believe thats the real figure?

Why on earth is that unfortunate?

I have a copy of the flight manual here at home and it's designed to cruise at M 3.2 between 80,000' - 85,000'. The stories you have heard about it being at 140,000', etc, are all fiction.

The word was always that if something else broke the SR-71s speed record they'd just go up and put their foot down a bit more than last time to take it back.

I think I might hold the time to climb record for a C207!

0-1000 feet in 14 minutes and 37 seconds...

Yeah the Su 27 is a great toy.
# Service ceiling: 18,500 m (62,523 ft)
# Rate of climb: 300 m/s (64,000 ft/min)
So in less then 1min you could be at your ceiling

Remember trying to beat the height record between the Isa and CCY in the metro freight config, I think it was FL250.
Must have been a 23, nearly empty and having burned a full tank of Water-meth???

I've never seen >FL205 by CCY..

ROFPML! Far more likely empty, min fuel & on the favourable side of a strong mountain wave!!!

Those things are unmitigated pigs. It'll be a cold day in hell I ever strap one of those mongrel 207's to my sorry arse again -in any capacity.

What is the climb profile for these jets. Climb at an IAS like normal aircraft just very steep or is it a vertical climb?

If you had a suitable jet, and wanted to go for the record, would you find the place that was as cold as possible?

Does a record have to be set from an airfield that is exactly at sealevel?

I seem to remember the 'Streak Eagle' as mentioned by FO4EVA set its record from attempts made in Alaska (ie coldest accessible environment they could find).

hmmmmmm

Excuse my ignorance but would you not want to do it in an equatorial zone? Higher TAS with the warmer temps, then a higher tropopause giving you more of a lapse rate to colder temps at altitude before hitting stable temps of the stratosphere?

Did a bit more research and it seems the Streak Eagle flights were conducted from Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. I remember seeing video footage and there was abundant snow hence the Alaska assumption.

It had much better than 1 to 1 thrust to weight ratio and could outclimb a Saturn V Moon Rocket to almost 60,000 feet. This same aircraft flew to 98,430 feet (30,000 meters) in 207.80 seconds (less than 3 minutes and 30 seconds). It also had bigger engines than the 'stock' standard F15 and was stripped of paint to reduce weight. Maybe for the time to climb records, as opposed to absolute ceiling records, engine performance was more of a consideration than aerodynamic performance.

I would have thought the engines would have performed better in the tropics too with the denser, colder atmosphere at altitude?

Yup Jaba, I read it correctly (wun tousand, FL010) and responded appropriately -my comments stand

Those pigs only get airborne by courtesy of the curvature of the earth!!!

Many moons ago, it took me almost 30 track-miles to get one up to that same 1000' AGL (admittedly in less than favourable conditions). I reckon it only got there because of the constant sucking of my pucker on the seat. Last time I ever flew one. Walked away, never looked back.

So ugly the Earth repels them, still better looking than a helicopter though!
