In summary, if you are lucky the hourly rate is less than a supermarket shelf stacker but a bit more than a paperboy.
But at least you won't have to pay for it anymore.....

Expect to be casual as a grade 3, mid 30s as a grade 2 and into the high 50s once you have a META and are a grade 1.
Then expect a paycut if you want to be a regional FO and ever get the call from an Airline.

This kind of subject gets beaten around every couple of months....
These days most Instructors would be getting the award.
(....and if they are not then they should quit).
I heard a bare-bones Grade 3 with NVFR is on about $34k p/a.

The reward is definately enough for most of us but a man has to eat and put a roof over his head. Some may even wish to put fuel in their car?
If instructing doesn't pay enough to do this then a man's forced to look for work else where which could pull you out of the industry

Depends where you are I guess. I know guys who can't afford to live on instructing alone (getting paid per flying hour with low student numbers) and have primary incomes at fast food joints and other jobs. On the other hand I know guys who are on very nice pay checks as far as GA is concerned.
Depends on what organisation you are at as well. There are still too many instructors for the job positions at the moment in NZ at least. A couple of my mates got made redundant not long ago so the GA industry for now is still in a sort of a slump.

It really depends where (and how much) you work. You can certainly be ripped off very effectively if you allow it, but equally there are some very well paid jobs out there. The best I've managed was just over $70k as a gr. 1 with META.

I've been looking through this FWA business as per Marks post and it's got me wondering.... Where is the Kiwi equivalent?
It's well known over here that a quick and easy shift across the ditch will provide, not only more opportunity, but a higher base salary across the board. Leaves us Kiwis with no reason to stay in the country except the desire to stay home. 30k for a junior Ccat? (grade3) no chance mate. 40k for a Bcat? (grade2) tell him he's dreaming. Not to mention the weak currency / cost of living blah blah blah.....
You fellas reckon you're earning peanuts, looks pretty good from here.

NZ is not so fortunate when it comes to keeping educated citizens (not just Pilots).
As a country NZ 'invests' a lot in educating their citizens across a broad range of disciplines only to lose a sizeable number to Australia and elsewhere.
NZ also seems to have a culture of not giving newcomers a chance to start a career. Many companies in NZ seem to only want staff with prior experience (i.e. - not invest in training new staff).
