Random A380 question
Hi all,
Looking at NOTAMs and noticed the following:
A380 OPERATIONS
EXCEPT AT YPDN, YSSY, YBBN, YMML, YBAS, YPPH, YPAD WHERE SPECIFIC
CALCULATIONS HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED, A380 PILOTS MUST USE LOC MDA IN
LIEU OF PUBLISHED ILS DA
FROM 06 040622 TO PERM
which has evolved from the last time I recall reading it in detail. Curious that they've surveyed Alice Springs - is this because it's a likely/designated alternate (for where?) or was it a case that they were just passing though?
Anyone know? (or care!)
UTR

On balance, I find that the NOTAMS have slightly fewer errors than the FS mag!
Thanks for the info - can ASP actually support an A380? Or would they have to deal with that once it landed? Would it get airborne again (with PAX) on a hot sunny day?

One of these big fellas can do it so I'd think a Dugong could as well:

The turning nodes are big enough to do a 180 turn and at ISA conditions and nil wind, the A/C could depart at up to approx. 493 tonnes (195 tonne payload). (At 35 degrees C. MTOW reduces to about 453 tonnes (that's a full pax load and about 100 tonnes of fuel, which is about 7.5 hours with reserves)). Aircraft is able to use a couple of the taxiways and apron. Weight of a bit over 500 tonne is pre-approved.
Alice Springs - no probs.
Capn Bloggs, In your scenario it would work out to be not quite full flex but close (5 degrees less than full) however the idea of flex is to remain at a balanced field length, therefore not much margin. (The A380 is one of the first aircraft to be certified to allow take-off thrust to be less than climb thrust.) On the other hand, at 'Full Loud' we would be in the Flight Levels before crossing the far end of the runway, figuratively speaking. When the dugong is empty, it goes up like 'a fart in a bath'.

Why are you surprised an A380 can operate out of Perth?? 747s have been have been operating on & off for years. Did you ever thing EK might want to operate an A380 once a day instead or 2 flights per day in a 777 & A345? The terminal is not set up for it but thats all at this point.
3 A380s have been to Perth so far.

The EK model is as many flights a day as possible to offer customer flexibility, and if extra slots are not available they put the sky-pig into use, like Soul, Jeddah, Toronto, Paris, Heathrow......
As of September it will be 2 x 777
EK diverted a 380 into PH in December.
