DAMEs - Recommendations for Class 1 Medical Renewals

I've been doing my medical renewals overseas for many years now and my regular, trusted doctor in Australia has now retired.

Anyone have any good recommendations of DAMEs for a minimal, no-fuss, Class 1 medical renewal?

We all know the kind of doctor I'm trying to avoid...the overly zealous or overly pedantic kind...the one who spends hours scrutinising you for some undiscovered disease in the hope that you'll further their professional medical career rather than just the minimum medical probing required to make sure you're safe and can relax as you continue to earn your living.

Preferred locations: Sydney or Brisbane/Gold Coast

Cheers,

PG

I used Doc Chaffee this year.

I was pleased with his service.

He's an ex-military no nonsense kind of guy.

He also does USA FAA and Canada medicals.

Another thumbs up for Dr. Chaffey

Have not used him for a few years myself (as I no longer reside in Brisbane), but still hear good reports from others!

Also used Dr. Michael Powell in Ascot. Yes he's retired, but his son Ben has assumed the role!

Maybe you know him better than I.......

Something to add perhaps? Or was that a general comment about Military Doctors?

I rather liked Dr. Chaffey....

You must be on a commission. Didn't know it was ethical to tout for business on these boards. Have done favours for friends myself though, so will say no more. Everyone, -even pilots-, moving into a new environment, don't get it right first time every time, and they don't compensate for unnecessary ordered extra tests, loss of income, or relocation expenses either.. So we all just live with it, learn, and move on.

An instance I know of, the owner of a company who had suspended a pilot because he had drawn attention to safety items made it a condition of reinstatement to flying status that the pilot attend a doctor of their choice (not the pilots regular DAME), and the company would pay for it. Reluctant on principle, he eventually complied, as he wanted to keep flying for them if the safety items were addressed. When an extra test was required, and Aviation Medicine got involved, the owner didn't wait for the results of that but terminated the pilot with the offer of an extra months pay if he renounced any right to other claims. It was refused. When given the all-clear by specialists, and Aviation Medicine satisfied, the owner wouldn't even see the pilot in his office, but had his secretary turn him away at the front desk. Not that CEO's finest moment..

Not really suprised then to hear the company surrendered its AOC a few years later as the result of a safety incident....

Or two then... (maybe)...

A doctor I used to go to (and his father - A DAME before him, also was the family doctor for the parents till he retired) sold out of his practice for medical reasons himself, but later came back to it and did a couple of days a week. With a need to see him, I made an appointment and duly turned up to be told that I would be seeing another doctor as he didn't come in that day. When explained that I wanted to see 'my' doctor who I had seen for years, was told I was 'racist' (the other doctors in the practice were now all foreign born and trained) and I would have to go elsewhere. Sure cuts the ground out from under you when you lose trust in your doctor !! Like I said earlier, seeing a new doctor for the first time, as someone I know had to,(- was made to, unnecccessarily, as it turned out), there is always an exploratory period that can have repercussions.

Can understand where you're coming from..

Lots of positive feedback on Ian Marshall (Brissie) any Sydney recommendations?

Thanks for all the responses and PMs guys.

A lot of people have good things to say about Dr Ian MARSHALL:

Walton Bridge Medical Centre
976 Waterworks Road
THE GAP QLD 4061
Ph: 07 3300 1900
Fax: 07 3300 5813

Any more recommendations...especially Sydney?

Cheers,

Popgun,

Now there's an apt name for this thread (lol!)

In Sydney try the Sydney Aviation Medical Centre - Suite 506, Level 5, 74 Pitt St (it's just about opposite the entrance to the Wyndard St Railway Stn..get off the train at Wynard and head to Pitt St, Exit, cross Pitt St and there it is). Ph: (02) 9965 3723. Fax: (02) 9221 2116 Mobile (yes, mobile): 0419 490 588.

Both Dr's there are females and are very professional. Ring before you go though as you'll need to book in. Once on their database they send you out a reminder each year which also makes it a bit easier. The medical always comes through quickly. Another good thing is afterwards you can wander down to Circular Quay if the mood grabs you and have a couple of beers watching Sydney Harbour while you reflect on how you went.

I for one have no complaints whatsoever. In fact I can't wait for my next examination.

Hey Tambo,

I've always found Dr Malcolm Hoare of Rossmoyne to be friendly - have been going to him for a few years now, ever since 'Dr Jag' retired from the DAME scene.
Convenient appointments not a problem, generally.
Cheers
