The PC12NG is a nice bit of kit, having said that you can have all the standby instruments in the world, but if that donk stops, it won't do you any bloody good!

Give me the steam driven dials and two donks thank you

Over to Wally!

Limited panel is a great skill to have, and unfortunately it's probably going to drop out of the bag of tricks young pilots learn as technology continues to get cheaper and flasher.

Of course designers plan redundancy into new systems, but I like to have that confidence that even if things go badly wrong, as unlikely as it may be, I can still get myself out of trouble.

Also, we can legislate as much as we like, but it seems there'll always be aeroplanes flying around carrying unserviceabilities (probably with younger, less experienced crews on low pay flying them), pushing into bad weather or NVMC with nothing much in the way of external references where it's those basic old-school skills that'll save the day (or night).

Being able to 'reverse engineer' a mental attitude picture from the performance instruments isn't just handy for IMC / night either - if you're surrounded by big hills a la PNG without the big flat old horizon we're used to in most parts of Australia, it can be pretty useful too.

I'd add in being able to turn off the GPS and still find your way round accurately by clock-map-ground as something we shouldn't leave home without, either.

Gee Josh that's a fancy looking instrument panel in that pix you posted 'till I looked beyond the screen & saw a vision just at the end of the bonnet that would scare the hell out of me if it was so whilst in flight!!!!!

Now now 'GG' we don't want to upset the true believers (fools, said as a term of endearment of course) now do we?

Back in the 80's during another life I used to work on planes. There was a mod available for a second stby vac source taken from the engines manifold. Can't recall all the details but was idiot proof as long as the donk was turning. I fitted a few of these units & one was a C210, worked a treat. Perhaps they are still available?
Everyone knows how I feel about SE IMC flying but if you have to do it how crazy is it to rely on one vac source?
Lim panel in IMC? The hardest thing to do I reckon.Would take LOTS of practice to nail that skill, something we rarely do on a reg basis.

One chap managed a flight in excess of 33 hours non stop with this panel. What we now call limited panel was once a full panel.

And four chaps flew the Pacific behind this, including some well documented time IMC in thunderstorms.

Bunch of softies we now are.

He didn't have much option - there's no window to look out of!

Yeah, still around. They get fitted then sit foregotten. Heard of one bored pilot waiting on the ground fiddling with the panel... pulled on stanby vac and the cable came out...
