Garmin Navigation Data Alert

Users of Garmin GNS gear need to be aware of this!

TO: Owners/Operators of GNS 4XX/5XX (WAAS and non-WAAS) units and Garmin Integrated Flight Deck Systems

DATE: 11 February 2010

SUBJECT: DME Arc Legs Computed Incorrectly

AFFECTED PRODUCTS: All Garmin GNS 4XX/5XX (GNS 480 is not affected) units with operating software v2.07 and newer, all GNS 4XXW/5XXW (WAAS) units; and all G900X, G950, G1000, Perspective™, and Prodigy™ Integrated Flight Decks.

DESCRIPTION: A small number of DME arc transitions in the navigation database (all outside of the U.S.) are incorrectly computed/displayed when the approach is activated. This results in an erroneous point-to-point flight path instead of an arc flight path, or in some cases, the arc flight path leg is absent.

PILOT ACTION: Do not fly the listed approach procedures (Table 1) using GPS navigation when operating with any Navigation Database prior to Cycle 1003.


RESOLUTION: The approaches that cause the erroneous DME arc transitions will be removed from Cycle 1003 and future cycles of the Navigation Database until the issue is resolved.

Hi Forked Tailed Dr Killer,
May I call you Dr next post? I enjoy your comment on many topics; arc intercept using GPS, particularly to a user defined wayoint or in the land of sheep, an ATC radar vectored join for the arrival, can be difficult when under stress. Errors in the data base are a real worry. Current A notamn in NZ is highlighting other problems with KLN 90 B database. Sure,the US have guaranteed no dither, but pilots must be aware- garbage in, garbage out. Do not forget to check your point in space, and back up if you can with something else. Cheers. Pushplay.

Yeah Pete - but don't home on it below the height of the aerial..

Used to do the twin locator approach at Santo years ago in some crap weather. With one at the far end of the runway, and the other miles out to the S.E. lined up with the centreline, a needle behind and a needle ahead, all in a straight line, it was like riding on a trainline. The biggest problem then became just using one set of eyes in the cockpit to see the runway through the driving rain in time to land on it..

For a while until it was dug up again and fixed, after the cabling for the runway lights was laid directly into the soil, when it got wet, the power was bled away, and the lights went dim when you needed them most at night too..

It's hard to beat..

..the single-engined inverted NDB Approach at night with circling whilst activating the PAL and pouring a cuppa from the Thermos!

Yes, I will require lots of radar vectors to get onto the YBCS 15 ILS next Tuesday morning!
